Oh my...
Within the context of free form exploration game play, a knockout while airborne was achieved through player skill, not a simple button push. The need for any kind of player skill has been stripped from this Thief experience. The importance of sound not only for game play, but also overall atmosphere... butchered.
Great point.

I honestly don't have a problem with the painting. The other games had a bunch of weird abstract art.

Just take a look and compare: (

In those pictures, when there's something weird going on it has mythological/religious significance. This one looks like furry fanart from a FM.
Edit: also, they actually fit in with the real paintings.

Actually, I don't remember any FM which had any kind of furry in it. I think they went the extra mile there...
If it's an existing painting made by a surrealist artist a la Dali, well that's still weird but I could accept that. Thing is, it blends so well in the grey environment it looks like an artwork made especially for the game by one of EM's artists, and that's just wrong.

I don't like the fact that upgrade and equipment screen is shared. Upgrades seem to be pretty expensive, but equipment on the other hand - very, very cheap. If they are some serious limitations with places where you can buy/upgrade things AND limitations concerning amount of arrows of one type you can hold at the same time in quiver, then it may be ok.
But still I don't want a situation known from T: DS, where shopping was very unbalanced and Garrett quickly grew way too strong... In T1 and T2 shopping was far more interesting; you never had too much money for equipment, there always were tough decisions to be made.
Shopping screen in Thief 4 is really bothering me.

Nowhere in any of the other games were there nude animals with human breasts as far as I remember so I'm still firmly in the 'Why the hell is there furry fanart in Thief?" camp. There is a huge difference between abstract art and weird fetish.

Look dude, I'm not trying to rain on you or anyone else who is optimistic about the game
I understand why you say this, because I'm constantly talking positively, but to be clear, I wouldn't describe myself as optimistic. I used to describe myself as guardedly optimistic, with is quite different. As we discover more, I am more optimistic about some things, and more cynical about others. (e.g., Beleg's report makes contextual movement sound pretty bad.)
The main reason I appear optimistic all the time is that other people here tend to be more negative then me, and I'm responding to them.

Even so, it seems like you are burying your head in the sand, refusing to acknowledge the fact that every trailer we have seen has more emphasis on the action bits. This game has had a huge focus its action! I'm not saying stealth isn't there but that it seems secondary.
Maybe I am, but seriously ... what action? I count a handful of fights, but hardly anything compared to the amount of sneaking around. In terms of fraction of trailer time, there's no comparison really. I just don't understand what action you think you are seeing?
I'm wondering if your idea of action includes stealthy takedowns and stealthy maneuvering that includes swooping?

Have all the trailers been a couple minutes? There are some lengthy ones out now that are much longer than several minutes. Comparing trailers from the previous games should not matter, consistency where there is none. Thi4f isn't really vying for fans of the previous series, if they were, they'd be showcasing some of the finer points of Thief's great stealth gameplay
...
All the videos have been showcasing the takedowns and focus based gameplay. We've seen some of the elements of plan, observe, execute but the complete picture on stealth is not entirely clear, especially when it comes to sound being in the mix.
As far as I can tell they have showcased these elements? We have Garrett looking around, locating guards, and choosing ways to go around those guards without interfering with them, or taking them down without being spotted. That's observing, planning, and executing ...
And yes, we have some trailers that are longer, but what do you expect to see? Do you expect to see the guy spending minutes looking around carefully deciding what the best route is? It's a promotional trailer! That's never going to happen.

Well we know we can't simply jump to make a ruckus. The points you've mentioned have not really been utilized in any of the trailers. Were noisemakers confirmed? We have not seem him tap the wall with his blackjack or anything to create a distraction. Have blunt arrows been shown to distract a guard? The only distractions I've seen are the crate dropping (which did not alert the guards). I am not sure but I thought in another video he threw a bottle between two guards and they did nothing, I could be wrong on this.
I'm pretty sure that noisemakers have been confirmed, but can't be 100% sure off the top of my head. I am 100% sure that the devs have stated you can bump into things to make noise, blunt arrows can distract guards, and thrown objects can distract guards.

Correct me if I missed it but I have not seen one emergent scenario played out in a trailer. IMHO that should have more prominence! Also, do the guards bleed? Will we be cleaning up blood puddles with water arrows? We haven't seen the AI do anything remarkable or even comparable to the previous games. I find this largely concerning, especially since they are nearing the mass production phase.
I really think you're looking for things that just can't be shown in trailers. You need to play it for several hours to get a good feel for it. At the end of the day, there's a lot we'll never know until we (for some value of we) have the game in our hands.
Shinrazero on 14/10/2013 at 06:00
Yeah, we can endlessly speculate but the whole picture won't be clear until we play the game. I wish they'd release a demo.
Esme on 14/10/2013 at 07:11
EM are going the pre order exclusive content route to entice customers to buy, which makes the probability of getting a demo is so close to zero as to be indistinguishable.
