For me at least, the old effects look better.
I don't get that at all. Bespin is way nicer (views over city vs blank white walls), CG X-wings crusing past look far more convincing than a few blurry model shots etc etc. I agree it looks odd when they suddenly cut back to some plastic model star destroyer but that's just not a movie-killing thing for me. (tho I'd rather they just replace
all the plastic models.)
And Han? Self-serving amoral type, made good. Either way.
So, yeah, I do have to ask about where these sentiments are coming from. Not cos there's anything intrinsically wrong with them, I guess, sorry if I sounded snide before. A lot of this might just be I'm not all that nostalgic about Star Wars in the first place (not old enough to have seen any of the originals at the cinema).

Are people really that bothered over whether Han shot first?
Damn fucking straight. Han Solo is defined in that short scene. If you make it so that he's merely reacting to Greedo's inept attack (lol how do i hamfistedly fucked up my assassination attempt from point blank range) then you irrevocably alter everything that is great about that character.
Han Solo is smarter and cannier than Greedo shoots first.
Han Solo is a bigger bastard than Greedo shoots first.
Han Solo is not Han Solo if Greedo shoots first.
And on the subject of George Lucas... surely this guy has eaten enough pies by now? What can he need all that money for? I used to love Star Wars, but it's just an empty shell of commercial tat now, designed to squeeze every last penny from its loyal fanbase. If I ever meet Gerge Lucas I am going to shove every limited edition figurine up his rectum.

My love of the Star Wars films was created when I was kid, because it was PIRATES IN SPACE. I don't think I had the slightest clue who shot first. That's the kind of thing that would only bother me if I was into the films on an adult level, and while I think 'hey, yeah, that does make the movie a bit worse', that only impacts on the part of me that tries to justify liking Star Wars on its cinematic merit rather than the fact that it's got LIGHTSABRES and X-WINGS and SWOOSHY SOUND EFFECTS.

According to that site, the original episodes are only available on DVD release from mid-Sept to December. That's a really small window of time, 3.5 months. I'd like to get these, but give me a little time to even save a little money and get to the store... It's just going to pass me right by. & I have little intrest in getting the DVD's without this "bonus" material.

If it's gonna take you longer than the period of time between now and December to save up ~$25, I'd recommend saving that money :tsktsk:

I like the special editions. The last set of DVDs improved the picture quality threefold over the original VHS set. So there's a song on Return of the Jedi, who cares; that movie was always stupid anyway.
To save myself 60 bucks, I'll pretend Han shot first... not that it makes a difference either way, we're talking character development in Star Wars...

The louder you wail, the more money George makes. Funny how that works, eh?

At last, we will release the original films on DVD. At last, we will have our revenge. I've been waiting for you, flanneled one. You caved in at last. There's still good in you. I've felt the conflict.:eww: :eww: :eww:

BTW, Scots, you
paid for the laserdisc transfers? :nono:
Yeah, like $20 for all three. I don't consider it a massive loss. I've already watched them once already. :)
As for Chimpy's question, my response would echo ignatios rather than Stronts, however as I've grown older, I completely agree with StD's sentiments and feel much the same way.
On a fundamental level: it's wrong because it's different from how I remember and that's where my love of the OT comes from.
On a more sophisticated level: many of the additions, revisions and changes anger me because of the way they either interrupt the movie, or create artificiality (Jabba scene HELLO!) or are simply fucking bad (replacing the Ewok song and introducing a second musical number in Jabba's palace).

Of course we're talking about character development in Star Wars, it's the entirity of the story for fuck's sake. For example SPOILER WARNING Darth Vader comes good in the end, did you miss that one too? That's character development, folks, and it ain't exactly an trifling detail in this story.
OK, so some of you could not care less about character development ...in STAR WARS oh christ the vein at my temple is really starting to throb now... and/or see no distinction between ruthless pre-emptive killing and sporting self-defense. Fiiiiiiiiiiiine. How's your grasp of geometry? Because call me picky, but I'm not at all convinced that a guy pointing a gun at another guy on the other side of a two-foot table-top, with a rock-steady aim and no pesky kinks in the barrel, can miss his shot by some 30 degrees. So hang the storytelling if you like, but does it seriously not bother you that the entire scene
LOOKS RIDICULOUS
and is
IMPOSSIBLE
?
