*Edit* you posted at the same time as me Epos, so I'll respond here. WHY NOT? I swear, the man spends so much time on the visuals of the new movies, you've got to wonder what his priorities are. 5.1 audio is such a big step up, it's hard to understand why he'd be one of the only movie producers to re-release a movie without even adding the option to hear a new mix of the sound. It's sad, because it shows how much contempt he has for his audience. He'll change plot points, small aspects of the movie, and add whole sections, but he won't go to the trouble to fix a couple of scenes well within his power to fix (see the regular portion of my post) or do a simple 5.1 mix of the audio.*/edit*
$50 says he leaves the stupid mattes around the TIE fighters again. I still don't understand why he did that in the originally released DVDs? It was OBVIOUS to everyone in the room with me when I watched them how bad that was. And it's not even that hard to fix. I mean, the amount of computer animation alone in eps 1-3 was far more work than going through the
original movies and removing all the instances of little flaws would be. But jesus, that's lazy right there.

Indeed. I just gathered from the original link that these re-releases will be fairly cheap. Adding in much more than the original as it originally appeared would probably add to the cost, especially considering what a pain it supposedly was to remaster the sound in Episode 4 due to the poor quality of the archives (according to (

Of course, I hold off on getting the Star Wars DVDs waiting for these, and when I finely break down, put em on the holiday wish list, and get em after having not seen the movies in like, 8 years, this is announced.
No real biggy, though - Boba Fett's new voice annoys me to no end and some of the CG is stupid, but I'm not as riled up about the SEs as some people. Not enough to buy the movies again, anyway. Worth a rental, maybe.

Greedy Lucasfilm. First they are denying any possibility of releasing original versions, now this. And they produce newer and newer versions just to drain your pockets.

There's no such thing as a "simple" 5.1 mix, if it's going to be worth hearing. I really can't see why having a surround mix on these releases is necessary. As far as I'm concerned, a surround mix would be inappropriate, as the technology wasn't in use from '77 to '83.
By the way, I don't think anyone was forced to buy any DVDs. Also, Star Wars is an entertainment product, not a public service. George Lucas doesn't actually owe you anything, so just take it easy. I mean, if you're that pissed at the guy download the torrents when they turn up and deny him the profits.

scumble, the "only an entertainment product" line is a bit bullshit to be honest, Lucas has treated fans of the series with little more than contempt at several turns. I mean, he said flat out that this series of DVDs would NEVER be released. In fact, it's worse - he said they were destroyed. Why would someone say that, when it was so obviously not true?
Because the guy's a flaming cock.

The man knows how to churn money, that's fer sure. I'm glad that I have the originals on Laserdisc, but I will most probably add to the Lucas empire by buying the originals on DVD when they come out.
They are the only really good Star Wars movies, anyway. The longer it has passed from the release of the new trilogy, the more I come to realise how much I dislike them, and how much I love the original trilogy.

I am in the position where I can honestly say that the star wars films have been utterly ruined by how much they've been fucked around with, "fucked around with" includes making three terrible money-grubbing prequels which erased any sense of mystique or cleverness about the original films. I really can't watch the originals any more.

OK, so I'm not so familiar with the ongoing story of slightly different versions of the Star Wars films and what Lucas may or may not have said.
However, the fans should have treated him in kind and not supported him, instead of rushing out to buy every re-release and then complaining that they were "robbed". Nobody
has to have all of them. It is not necessary for continuing with life. The world still turns even if Lucas has misled everyone who wanted to see the original cuts of the films again.
Regardless of how one views Lucas, I just get slightly annoyed at people who keep buying re-releases of the same product and complain about being "manipulated". If that's the case, they should stop handing over money. That's the only sure way to encourage Lucas to get his act together and stop pissing about.
Incidentally, we don't know whether these editions came from the original prints, so it's possible that Lucas could still have been partially honest. Maybe he just got tired of everyone bothering him about it. I don't know - unless you can ask him you don't know what was going on in his head over the years.

Why? If you can still watch the laserdiscs, what attraction does another release have?

Right, I guess that remixing the movies to 5.1 or 7.1 would be a quite difficult task, because they would have to get recordings all original effects and dialogues separatedly (maybe still on on magnetic tapes), then filter out the noise and polish them, them mix then carefully together to the original soundtrack's image.
