General Inadequecies (aka. I Suck) - by Stainboy

Probably not the best thing to admit, but i'm finding Oblivion quite difficult. Especially considering that the game supposedly scales up around you, it shouldn't really be this hard. Granted, i'm playing some sort of stealthy/swordy/arrowy class, so slugging it out at close quarters isn't really my thing, but I still seem to struggle against most opposition. Hell, even Imps. Even Imps.
That admission of inadequecy over, i'll move over to the real subject. For, say, a Level 5 character, what is a realistic armour rating? Mine at the moment is 7, which, going by Morrowind standards, is pathetic. Similarly, my Steel Longsword has an attack of 5. This all seems pretty low, which might explain my struggling.
Ideas? Comments? Or am I just in over my head, and need to level up a bit?

Maybe, although if you keep getting your arse handed to you, bring the overall difficulty down. I like to take things easy so I probably set it lower than most, but it seems flexible enough to get it to the level you want. I mean, I have a Steel Claymore attack of 3 and it's taking down goblins with a couple of blows, and the stealth multiplier has me taking many things down with one arrow, so maybe the difficulty goes down so low it's almost cheating...
Armor rating of 8 by the way - mixture of chainmail and iron gear.

Not finding it too tough so far but then I've gone for the knight in shining armour who's good with big swords. Perhaps not the most difficult character to play. Are you pursuing the quest yet or have you gone your own path to level up first?

I'm just messing about at the moment, doing assorted quests around the land. I really struggled up at Kvartch, that needed multiple replays - especially when you hit the Flame Atronachs. My general tactic now is 'Run Away', and that seems to be working. :p
I'll try changing the overall difficulty, see how that goes. Though regarding light armour - i'm up to skill level 50 now, yet my armour rating is still only 8. :erg:

Armor ratings seems to be weird.
Got a mithril outfit now, and it might be one or two points better then chainmail now, but when i got it they had the same rating.
Same with weapon damage.

I assume the same applies for armour ratings (and possibly weapon ratings) as in Morrowind: it displays the value modified by your armour skill... Thus if your armour skill is low, it might not make a difference even if you wear better armour.

I have yet to bother with Kvartch, just took the horse from the priory and rode into the sunset, my trusty blade on my back looking to right the wrongs of the world for the commoners. Now I'm a lowly member of the fighters' guild - a journeyman.

If you're a thiefy type character with no combat skills, I imagine you'll be sneaking around Oblivion rather than fighting the mobs there.
I didn't test that, of course, but I know you don't have to kill a single mob in any of the oblivion gates. Whether you can sneak around them, is a different story.

Perhaps its a case of "jack of all trades, master of none" -syndrome?
My experience with the game (and Morrowind also) is that it generally does not work if you try to be a little bit of everything. You need to really concentrate on your characters major skills, and exploit them.
You need to decide at least between the following, and then stick to it:
- magic or conventional character
- ranged or closed combat
- light or heavy armor
- speed or strength
- stealth or not
(This is of course before creating your character, which kind of makes it a moot point for you...)
I'm currently playing with a Nord-Crusader-Warrior combination which gives a good baseline for melee and armor, with a splash of destructive magic. But he's slow, clumsy and hopeless with any kind of bow. Zero personality. And sneaking doesn't go with steel boots.
Now, at level 5, my stats are:
- Armour rating 31 with heavy armor skill of 49 (Blades complete heavy armor with shield)
- Katana with a damage of 7 with blade skill of 44 (the best I have seen is a Dai-katana with 8)
- Fireballs between 5 to 20 points of damage with destruction skill of 36
And occasionally I do get my ass kicked.

By the way, the condition of your weapons/armor affects the amount of damage they deal/protect from.
I always repair when my equipment gets aroudn 80%
