At the moment, my character seems to have considerable trouble hitting a rat with a long bladed sword. The series of frantic stabs which should have reduced the rat to pink goo result in nothing happening. It's very emabarrassing when you die trying to get rid of three of the little buggers in an old woman's house...
This magic sword I found must be some kind of sick joke...

Check you stats screen and see what weapons are in the major/minor listings, if Long Sword isn't there, then you're going to have a very hard time hitting anything with it for quite a while (your ability goes up as you make succesfull hits with the sword, but if the stat is low, like at about 5-10, you're hardly going to hit anything)
There are several sellers in Balmora that have some fairly low-cost magic weapons for sale, find one that matches your ability.
As a cheap way to help boost your chances to hit (and if you've got some magic ability) find a "bound" spell for the weapon of choice (long sword, short sword, spear, etc) and fight with the "bounded" weapon as part of the spell fortify's your ability with that weapon while you're using it.

I have to get myself in the RPG mindset again. It's been months since I played NWN.
See, I'm sure I trained for long blade skills, I just didn't check...
