ok, I am not sure what has happened but i recently attempted to close a gate and when i grab the stone, the fire goes away and there is the flash of light, but then i am just standing at the top and when i try to walk out a white fog covers everything? Any ideas?:confused:

Try to type into the console:
"movetoqt"
This will have you transported immediately towards your nearest quest location, which in this case, most likely, will be out of the gat ;)

that got me out, not just at the gate but back to the town my quest was in... not sure if it actually closed the gate tho... but not my problem now :cheeky:
