Hmm, I left my adopting parents. Does that mean I didn't like them or their upbringing? My children and grandchildren left to college, return and most left again...

"The most promising acolyte left us, not out of the lesser folly of sentiment, but the greater folly of anger."
Also, leaving your parents as you grow up is something everyone is expected to do. Leaving a secret order after you have been taught by them is another matter entirely.

you believe the anger was from abuse
i believe the anger was complacency in a corrupt society
Starker on 11/11/2018 at 12:13
I don't believe the anger was from abuse. I think it might have been because of how strict and secretive the keepers were. He probably felt restricted and wanted answers he wasn't getting and simply rebelled against that. In any case, it's clear there was some sort of a falling out and the keepers, for reasons of their own, decided to let Garrett go.
I don't think, however, that Garrett really cares about how corrupt the society is or about the inaction of the keepers. The way I see it, he's more of a pragmatist than anything else, and hence starts to take interest in the keeper prophesies only later, when they start to concern him personally.
"I've always equated feelings with getting caught; they both get in the way of my money."
"Tell you what. You keepers can plant a few shrubs about town and I'll take care of me. I'll find my own way home."

What answers would your Garrett want that leaving them would achieve? Two part question
Apologizes for dragging this off topic.
Starker on 11/11/2018 at 12:40
I'm not suggesting he left them because he wanted answers, necessarily, but rather because he felt suffocated by their secrecy. Kind of like the kid in Sunday school who keeps asking too many questions, but really just wants to go out and play.
"I know they're trying to manipulate me, but keepers never alter the truth... just keep it in the shadows."

Why did he get interested with stopping karras? He could of just left the city and let them all die and come back later to clean out the money. At least that's the impression I got from your previous quotes. Angry over their secrecy and leaving the order solved it! Yah, Your Garrett is not very logical.
Starker on 11/11/2018 at 14:02
Clearly leaving the order did not solve anything, as can be seen by their meeting at the end of the first game, but I believe that there is plenty of evidence that establish Garrett as someone who's pragmatic and self-interested. Why exactly he became angry with the keepers and had a falling out is not explicitly said anywhere, but, as I said, I don't think it's a very big of a stretch that it could tie into his upbringing and that Garrett might have resented the keeper education.
Why did he want to stop Karras? Because it became personal. Karras wanted him dead and it was heavily implied it was he who sent Truart and the watch after Garrett to dispense some swift justice. Did Garrett run when Ramirez sent assassins after him? No, he went and got even. And I don't think this was because of some altruistic principles or a sense of justice either.

I imagine Garrett doesn't have that much free time, although it would certainly depend on the season. Preparation is time consuming and an important part of his work that we only glimpse (Casing the Joint) because it's largely boring. I imagine a lot of heists are weeks in the making. Befriending the right people to get intel, getting the right tools for the job, planning escape routes and contingencies for when things go wrong, etc.
As for reasons he left the keepers, he clearly hates rules and authority, something the keepers have in spades, so it makes sense that he'd leave to forge his own path.
As for Karras, I agree that Garrett faces threats head on and won't likely run with his tail between his legs if he is personally targeted. Also by the time Karras had nearly hatched his plan it was probably too late to get out of dodge, and I imagine Garrett DOES have some small collection of real friends that he cares about and wouldn't feel comfortable leaving for dead.

Besides, what would he be eating if all organic material would have been turned into rust by Karras? ;)
As far as the actual question of this thread is concerned:
I don't think that he has that much free time at this hands as does the rest of the lower-class people in a "medieval world". Most of them had to work their asses off in order not to starve to death.
Getting through the day was a full-time job back then for 99% of the population.
