can't get my GL to work. every time I try to install an FM i get a "run time error '9' subscript out of range message.
last night I tried to run GL and I didn't get this error but it totally destroyed both my T2 and T3 installs badly enough that I had to uninstall and reinstall them both which was a major pain for T3 since I had Minimalist and JohnP's both installed along with dracflamloc's thief launcher and the T3Ed installed. Potterr, if you (or some1 else) can't help me I'm gonna have to scrap everything and start over. I really don't want to do that. I tried to install the MDAC from microsoft today but it told me that it wasn't supported on my system and made it sound like I already had everything I needed.
thanks to the community in advance.
I'm running on Windows xp home edition (service pack2 I think)
512 ram
ATI Radion 9600 w/256MB ram
I run T3 with no problems what-so-ever on this system

I'm going to be away for a couple of weeks from now, but could you upload the debug.log file that was created and the install_recover.txt file as well.
A
run time error '9' subscript out of range message sounds like you may have been installing a very large FM:
(
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/script56/html/vserrsubscriptoutofrange.asp) http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/script56/html/vserrsubscriptoutofrange.asp
as GL was limited to 1023 files in version 1.01 and 1500 files in 1.02 (any bigger and I got a variable exceeded error).
With regards to trashing the Thief installs, GL should only delete files that it finds in the current_install.txt file in the root fo each thief install. T2 is a simple one to fix, simply delete the strings folder and any other folder in your T2 directory except ALLSAVES,SAVES,T2X,MOVIES,RES. T3 is a bit more complicated and you would need to delete each file that is recorded in the current_install.txt file manually. GL does however backup any files that would be overwritten into an ORIGINAL_BACKUP.zip file in the root of the T3 folder which can be extracted.
Although please note that there is only 1 complete fully working T3 FM out there at the moment and its not 100% understond what is required for each T3 FM to work.

thank you, once I get home tonight I'll find that stuff and put it up. it turns out that T2 wasn't really hit by GL it seems it was hit by a sloppy uninstall of T2X. sorry to malign your proggy unjustly it seems to work fine on T2 so far. T3 is the problem, and I appreciate that the FM distro needs haven't been fully resolved. I get that message on any load but I've only tried "Townhouse" and "Schizm" by Ziemansye and "Krellek's" by Ascottk correct me if I'm wrong but these aren't large missions, are they? the whole MDAC thing mystifies me. is there any way I can test that to see if I have what's needed I didn't understand a lot of what I read at the Microsoft website. I am a pretty low end user when it comes to computers but my love for Thief sometimes gets me biting off more than I can chew. if you need a "laymans perspective" test subject to see how stuff will be received by those who don't understand the inner workings of software and coding and such I'd be glad to assist.

since I'm not allowed to post attachments (not sure why, others can it seems) I guess I'll just copy n paste the stuff in those files here to be read.

Easiset to start off with explaining this:
Quote:
//STEPS TO FIX = previous FM files and folders have been deleted. 1) Current_install.txt needs to be deleted, 2) save games need to be backed up, 3) original_backup.zip (if existing) needs to be unzipped. This should now be restored to a clean install.
Here is the important part. Basically what its saying is that the previous FM has been removed, you need to delete the current_install.txt file in the selected games folder (as GL will try and read that again possibly causing an error 9 subscript out of range error). You then need to zip up any save games for the previously installed FM (as this was not yet done) if you want to. Finaly you need to unzip the original_backup.zip file to restore the thief game to its original install (i.e. you do not need to do a new install of thief or GL). One thing to remember is that the current_install.txt for T3 is in the T3 system folder and the original_backup.zip is in the root T3 folder (I did not explain this in the install_recover log file (it will be in a later release)).
If you are willing to be a guinea pig, it may be an idea to do a netmeeting at some point. That way I can give you a debug version of GL so that I can watch what its doing at each step on your PC.

Hey Potterr, I thought I'd try out GarrettLoader on a clean T3 install just to see what happens. I got a run-time error "The object invoked has disconnected from its client." I was trying to install Schism. I followed the instructions to clean up after, tried again and got the same error. :p
Just thought I'd pass my results on to you. :)
Edit: I'm running a dual install under C:\Thief3 (no Program Files folder!) I allowed GarrettLoader to move my saved games. If you need any other info, let me know.

Just a simple question, I've noticed that the t3main on porterr's site is the same size as the original games t3main (6.15MB), while the one that comes with the editor is 8.47MB. As i've never managed to get a mission to work with Garret Loader (and i've always had to completely re-install t3 after) could part of the problem be that the t3main i downloaded from porterr's site is the wrong one?

There are actually 3 versions of the T3Main.exe - the "shipping version", the "release version" and the "opt version" (Optional? Optimal?). The opt is the 8MB one (which has additional logging and testing capabilities), the others are identical in size but only one (release) works with FMs properly. I haven't explicitly checked potterr's downloadable version but I doubt it's the incorrect one.
ascottk on 18/8/2005 at 05:39
I'm noticing that Entry.gmp isn't being restored. I kept getting a T3Main.exe error. Once I restored Entry.gmp everything was (almost) fine.
EDIT: GL doesn't restore a few things to their previous state. Minimalist tweaks such as the menu items get distorted. I'm not sure which do & do not get restored properly.
