I saw Gangs of New York on TV the other night and thought it was a great thing, though one or two plot points escaped me (I took a few bathroom breaks). Namely, why did Amsterdam's friend Johnny betray him to Bill Cutting? And why did Cutting mutilate Johnny later on?

I sort of watched it a few weeks ago. I can't remember much but if they are the parts I'm thinking of Johnny stitched DiCaprio's character up because he was sleeping with that girl Johnny had thing for
I forget why he ended up mutilated.
I interpreted it as Cutting mutilating Johnny to a) get at Amsterdam and b) just because he was a bit of a spineless wuss. And by mutilated, we mean impaled on spikes, right? Or did I get the wrong guy?
You got the right guy, he was put on the spiked fence. I never really knew why Johnny betrayed Amsterdam, but that he was getting friendly with Johnny's crush seems a good idea, plus the fact that Amsterdam was so much damn cooler than Johnny could ever hope to be, and Bill liked him more, even though Johnny had been affiliated with Bill longer. Either way, he turned him over out of jealousy.
