Does anyone actually even do that? Video cards don't last forever -- 3 years of heavy use take their toll.

True, but that depends on how much you move the components around. The solders for stuff like the PCI-e power connector are bound to break if you transport a card from one case to another every few weeks, but e.g. my old Geforce 4 TI 4600 still works great. I'm considering trashing it though along with a Radeon 8500LE. It gets to the point where one can't justify keeping all this stuff around anymore

It played Quake 3 like a monster though, but only skated by in Doom 3.

Set up Grandpa with a Jolicloud account, and install Joli OS on that machine and you've got a supercharged email, IM, Skype, and youtube machine.
