So my friend wants to play Skyrim on PC. Mostly for the benefits of modding and that it will probably play/look better. I'm all for it.
Cept he has a laptop, with a cruddy intel integrated that isn't even getting driver updates anymore. I've convinced him not to get another laptop, that a desktop had more power for price, etc.
So he wanted to wait until Black Friday so he could get the best price. Shows me (
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Omni+All-In-One+Computer+/+AMD+E-Series+Processor+/+20%26%2334%3B+Display+/+4GB+Memory/3642037.p?id=1218422891966&skuId=3642037&st=3642037&cp=1&lp=1) this computer. Looked at graphics card. I'm thinking it'll barely run at the lowest settings. Not to mention he All in one design might have the same problem with an integrated card like a laptop. I'm a big believer in Interchangeable Parts!
And I find out his budget is approximately $400....
So I put this together:

***there's two cases there, FYI***
Final Price: $387-$407, depending on case choice.
I'm not sure I can do any better. He may not even want to build. I can find a pre-built that can run skyrim for under $600 (NOT including monitor/keyboard/mouse price). And a can't find a decent prebuilt for under $700.
Edit: And THEN I realize I forgot to add an OS, chalk up another $100. /facepalm
Any thoughts?

I don't think there's much I could recommend to cut away any further from that price, though I wonder whether it wouldn't be better to buy a (
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127600) Radeon 5670 instead of that 6570. I'd suggest having a look into it, I'm afraid I can't research it myself right now, work. And, if it's possible to find some sort of deal on a reputable brand PSU I think it might be worth going for it, I'd reckon even 400W would cut it for that system (as long as it's genuinely 400W sustainable, not "400W we-made-this-on-a-boat" brand).
As for the OS, can't your friend install it with the license he has for the laptop?

Hm, I'll have to ask him if he still has his Windows XP cd for his laptop. Hopefully it's not OEM.
Can't seem to shave more than $5 from the power supply before getting things like "Cheaply made" and "Overheats". Can shave off $10 for a good review 380W, but not sure if that's enough to cut it.
Oh look, I just realized I forgot a hard drive too. Another $100 for 500Gb... damn Thailand flood....

Have a look at this (
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026) Corsair CX430. Get a second opinion, but my guess is that unless he plans on upgrading down the line that 430W PSU should have that system all covered.
By the way, I don't know where that listing you put up is from, is it Newegg.com? 'Cause if it isn't you should have a look at that, I constantly hear about it supposedly having the best deals in the US.

yah, it's newegg.
I don't think any price increases are gonna be allowed. even for such i nice power unit. Used a calculator, and it seems like 380 will cut it, or maybe a bundled tower/PSU.
However, doesn't sound like he wants to build. he may end up just getting a new laptop that can't play it anyway.

For what it's worth, there's a system on Newegg for $400. It's an i3, 8GB RAM 500GB HDD, Windows 7. There's no GPU, but everything else. I had considered getting it myself and adding a GPU and replacing the PSU.
I don't know how to put links in but if you go to Newegg, go to the PC tab, click gaming, there's only 1 i3 system listed.

It's OEM. You only get a retail license if you go out and buy it yourself; NOTHING comes with one.

I have the XP cd that came with my Dell, but I heard you can only use it in Dells. True?

I can get you Windows 7 for $30 through the Microsoft Company Store. Happy to provide it for that + shipping.
