<slobbering> The only site I get my gaming news from is TTLG </slobbering>
I'm actually serious. I never take any of those website seriously, and I never read their articles.

I should clarify - I don't really mind the puns in the comments threads, it's the article titles that are the problem on that front. And frankly, the overly "witty-zany" style that runs through a lot of the writing in general.
It's a throwback to British Future Publishing magazine writing styles and even further back, stuff like Crash and Your Sinclair. The guys on the site would probably claim Amiga Power as being the biggest influence, but I'd argue the zany style in British games journalism owes the largest debt to good ol' YS.

I tried Feedly for a while when Google killed Reader, and while it's fast and neatly customisable, I didn't like the fact that they charge you for Search functionality, which is the main reason I settled on Old Reader.
I used Old Reader for a while, but then got a message that it was being discontinued for everyone but close friends of the owners, since their systems were getting flooded with Google Reader rejects (which includes me).
Malf on 10/12/2013 at 12:10
Yeah, I initially got that message too, which is what initially forced me to try Feedly. But they've since backtracked from that stance.
Edit: The only thing that really bugs me about Old Reader now is that either you can't or I haven't found a way to move interface elements around, meaning the left side bar gets obtrusively large on a 1920x1200 display. I just want a way to drag the vertical splitter left or right.

Ah, ok. Well, I have no intention of changing back again - not fussed about the lack of search functionality atm - but nice to know I could if I ever needed to.

Thing about the outrage porn is, well you guys know damn well that I can get pretty noisy about social issues on here, and god knows there needs to be a healthy discussion about the role of women and minorities and LGBTQ folk in gaming, but the problem is there's a right way and a wrong way. John Walker is from the Kotaku school of social justice. Worse, RPS don't actually want a discussion because unfortunately RPS's readership is comprised largely of troglodytes. I honestly think they should be less lazy about it and just harshly moderate the comment threads. Alternately they could just ban comments on every post, because let's be honest, they usually devolve into social justice debates and screaming about how Numenara not being RTwP has ruined their lives anyway.
And Kotaku, well... Kotaku tends to not fact-check their social justice warrior posts any more than they do their other posts, and instead prefer to charge blindly ahead into whatever's pissing off Gawker that day.
This is not how you do social justice. Kotaku uses it for clickbait, and RPS is entirely the wrong place for it, though I suppose there is no other way to get a message across to RPG Codex rejects, is there? Which is a shame all by itself.

When I initially started using Google Reader, I wasn't fussed about search functionality either, but by the time they killed it, I'd managed to gather so many feeds, it became essential in order to find crucial pieces of info. I use it for work-related and general news as well, so it's quite easy for threads to get lost amidst the thousands of updates I receive daily.

Yeah, a whole bunch of the RPS guys are old PC Gamer UK writers as well, and that was a mag I practically grew up on. I think that's why I love the writing.
Not crazy about most of John Walker's articles these days though. Like deth points out it's mostly complaining about popular franchises or "outrage porn". Why does he even bother playing the latest BF/COD's? It's just going to be whining followed by several pages of comments from tards falling over themselves in desperate attempts to prove how non-mainstream they are by hating on [popular franchise]. :tsktsk: Anyway, I just checked and there isn't a John Walker article on the first 4 pages of RPS at the moment(didn't check further), so it's not like his involvement is a dealbreaker or anything.

Didn't realise there was a reminiscing angle to it, it's just not my cup of tea. To compare, most often the news items you find on RPS will also be featured on Eurogamer, but I much prefer the latter's more matter-of-fact approach. I think I remember RPS being less zany and shrill back in the day, but maybe it's just that my dispositions have changed.
Malf on 10/12/2013 at 14:46
Yeah, Eurogamer's also made up of a lot of ex-Future guys, hence the cross-pollination.
