Its not "bullshit".
You gave a good example in Revolutions. Look at how valid the Ivory Tower people in the world were in regards to their opinion of the movie
In a world where every purchase or non-purchase is a vote, the one who has the most votes at the end of the day wins. If DXIW completely tanks in both reviews and purchases, then the whiners's opinion is validated. If it sells the inevitable boatload, and gains high ratings in reviews, their opinion is invalidated.
This is TTLG, so I'll just an example. Didnt System Shock 2 come out around the same time as Half Life? I think we all know who won that Game Election.

/me is already waiting for Deus Ex 2.5.

Thief came out the same day as Half Life, not Shock2.

From Gamespot,

and you can brandish your submachine guns and sniper rifles in public without anyone batting an eyelash. These types of things conspire to make the characters in the game seem lifeless and unconvincing
Well, at least this is better than DX1 where the characters would act like headless chickens. Whilst this may be more realistic, it forgot that players are USED to holding their gun in every other FPS. So maybe this is an improvement in some ways?

I have to say that I got the same impression... I was actually struggling to find the positive comments amidst the criticisms, and the overall feel of the reviewer's words suggested a score lower by at least a point or so.
Much like the Gamespy review. Funny that.

Paul Tozour left Ion Storm in the middle of DX2 development. Chances are he wasn't responsible for a lot of the AI (or rather lack of).

Perhaps but wouldn't you expect they try to be accountable for that and improve on it?
Really, an 8? It's great? The review sounds more like a 6.
Quote:
A game within this range has certain good qualities but significant problems as well. Games that score in the 6 range may well be worth playing, but you should approach them with caution.
Also, looking at the review score I notice "Tilt" got a 9. What the fuck is tilt?
Quote:
Reviewer's Tilt (Tilt)
This score basically lets a reviewer sway the final score--either higher or lower--based on the reviewer's experience with a game. Here's an example: A game might have really good graphics but really bad gameplay--so it gets a low tilt score to keep the overall score low, since the game ultimately isn't fun. Or a game might have poor graphics and sound but have a really good story--so it might get a high tilt to boost the overall score a bit.
Ooohhh, FUCK YOU.
I think we need to give it the Matrix sequels' treatment. PRETEND IT NEVER HAPPENED. Well, at least until some thoroughly pissed group releases a "patch" to make it like the first.

GameSpot gave it an 8.0, sure, but scroll down and look at the Reader Reviews. Average current score = 4.0
Ouch.
