Of course they've bloody well played the original games.
Firstly, it would be insane not to. Secondly, we have independent reports from both rock paper shotgun and the eidos forum players that the devs who were extremely knowledgeable about the previous games. Finally, there has never been any evidence at all to suggest anything different.

Well, technically speaking, the two sources I will provide only show that at least one of the devs has played the original games. Personally I think it's ridiculous to suppose that most of the team haven't, but anyway ...
