Um, guys, you have no idea if that +40XP encourages the player to snipe the guard, because you don't know what alternative approaches would award him.
As far as I know, the only word we have on what approach is rewarded with the most xp comes from the eidos forum players, who stated that xp rewards heavily favor stealth. I'm skeptical that it will reward ghosting, but at the very least it seems clear it won't reward shooting everyone in the face.

If it's like DX, then successfully ghosting a mission will be the equivalent of getting an XP handjob.
...though even if that's true, I still question the need of having XP in a Thief game. I dunno if it'll detract from the game exactly, but it certainly won't add anything to the...olol...experience.

I don't disagree, I'm simply pointing out that +40 xp does not in any way imply that headshots are rewarded, without taking the opportunity cost into consideration.
You could literally shift the amount of xp you got for killing, blackjacking, ghosting, etc downwards by a fixed amount, turning +40 xp into -40 xp, add a positive shift for completing the level, and the overall reward structure would turn out exactly the same. These are simple arithmetic exercises.

I didn't really want to get into the balance of the game, and whether stealth or aggression will give you more XP or whatever. But they are rewarding the player for the headshot by giving them something (in this case, 40 XP), but more so by by throwing the "Headshot" announcement there up on the screen. It's a badge of honor, almost like an achievement. And you can bet there will be a stats screen at some point with a grand tally of how many headshots you racked up. Bank on it.
Sorry, but the "Headshot" thing has mean seriously shaking my head at EM, more than being awarded 40 XP for it or anything else we've seen so far. Did you ever think you'd see such a thing in a Thief game? it really is inexcusable. I'm not staying the player can't resort to violence once in a while, hell I've done it. But this nonsense is just ridiculous.

I can agree on the headshot popup.
Of course, iirc thief didn't differentiate between headshots and other shots, so you could probably mount an argument that this game needs to supply feedback where thief didn't. But I still wouldn't want the pop-up, even if it meant supplying no feedback.

I played the first mission of 'Hitman Absolution' tonight at a friends house, and now I see where NuThief is going!
It had:
'Instinct' mode, exactly like the focus mode seen in the Thief videos, you can see people through brick bloody walls! :P
It had the little circle timer filling up when you pick things up.
You sort of stick to walls in the same way, you actually have to press a button to release yourself from cover as I recall, just horrible.
You can pick up one object at a time into your inventory to throw and make a distraction, such as a bottle or book, it then shows a swooping arc in the world to show you where it will land.
There was a section where you had to walk on a ledge outside some windows with guards inside the place, the camera was wrestled away from you so there was only 1 view, the view the devs wanted to show you, and even worse you had to press A to automatically duck past the window!
There was a part where I found some sleeping pills in a bathroom, then back downstairs I saw some coffee on a counter and it said in big letters above it ' Press A to put sleeping pills in coffee'
Thats the kind of thing that would have been awesome to figure out for myself. maybe you can turn that stuff off, maybe it was because it was a kind of tutorial level, I certainly hope so!
At every point I was playing exactly what the devs wanted me to.
With original Thief you could share stories with other players about things that happened during your adventure and they would be wildly different! With this game everyone would experience the exact same events in the exact same order.
The final thing, that made me want to share :p was the end of the mission where it told me to sneak to a certain point, by pressing the 'sneak button' and going to a glowing marker, it then showed me four bad guys and told me to hold down 'Instinct' and head shot each one, then press A to play that action, so on pressing A he killed them all in a 3rd person cutscene.
I didn't feel like I had 'played' a game at all.
The thing is I might play Hitman, simply because it looks really good, (as does NuThief no denying that) with beliveable environments and it's at least kind of stealthy but isn't trying to be Thief, NuThief is trying to be Thief, on the surface at least, and ironically is ripping off Hitman :) brilliant!
Also I totally called it (can't remember where) about the dramatic end of mission quick time event escapes in NuThief, I knew they would do that! I just know that big bridge with collapse while you are on it!

:laff:...Yes, NuThief is certainly an unoriginal rip-off...It's a terrible shame, considering they had the golden goose right in their hands.

You must understand,
NuThief is not a THIEF game...It simply fails to qualify...due to the difference in fundamental design philosophy.
Yet, it may turn out to an enjoyable game, if one is able to accept it for what it is...a quasi-Thief fan fiction experience.

I cant seem to find any (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141778&p=2194549&viewfull=1#post2194549) information on whether anyone on the new team has even played through Dark Project!
Isnt it critical that everyone on a Thief team should have not only played through Dark Project, but also enjoyed it or at the very least understood the damn game. Unreal, these bozos probably watched a video of Dark Projects graphics and laughed and said we got this, never even seeing the depth of gameplay lurking right below the surface. This is gonna be good...

I just watched a Let's Play of Hitman Absolution but still feel like I got to know it, and when the Thief media started coming out even early stuff, I saw it as a major inspiration too, maybe even more than Dishonored & Assassin's Creed.
And I was thinking it sort of works for a game like Hitman where the mission basically is the game. But to me, the game in Thief was really, at its core, the player in the environment, and navigating through it, which makes the 'open world' part of it more important than usual, and that's what gets played down with the Hitman Absolution kind of design.

One good thing about the vid linked to in the OP of this thread - sure, it's the same demo we've all seen a dozen times, but you're actually able to hear the sound in the game as there aren't people talking over the video continually (just occasionally). Gives you a little better feel for what playing the game is actually like at this point.
