Does
Gun qualify as a bad game?
I remember playing it and thinking it was decently good once I got used to the whole first/third person switching thing.
One of my most controversial favourites is Bioshock 2, which I think has far better shooty shooty bang bang than the original in basically every way (though its story is vastly inferior). It's also leagues above Infinite in that respect.

I think most people here feel that way about Bioshock 2 as well.

Yeah, Bioshock 2 was good.

Does
Gun qualify as a bad game? It was nothing out of the ordinary, but I had a blast with it. Same goes for
The Punisher (2005).
I liked both of those, don't think a lot of people would label them as "bad". "Mediocre" at worst.

When I was a kid I thought ET was ok, and Pac-Man was decent for what it was. The 2600 game I remember absolutely despising was Superman.
What gets me about people hating on Atari 2600 game--not at the time, but definitely since the mid-'90s--is we're talking about games that are like 4KB and written in around 2-3 months. I probably have some emails that are longer than that. I think it's kind of petty to reserve an opinion as strong as "hate" to games that small & written that fast. It's like hating on a flash or phone game.
That said, what I think is totally fair is recognizing certain Atari games that were masterful in getting such a great game into such a small package, games like (what comes to my mind) Pitfall, Joust, River Raid, Yar's Revenge, Demon Attack... But that's not the topic of the thread anyway.

It's all about Barnstorming and Cosmic Ark, Dema.

Oh shi... And Adventure. That has to be the best IMO.
Hell I still play Adventure on my train commute today.

I got to play Adventure a little bit. Somehow, my cousin ended up with a trash bag full of old 2600 cartridges, and I remember it being one of the better games buried in there.
But for me, my early years were spent with playing on my old Atari 800XL. It was all about The Goonies, Montezuma's Revenge, Spelunker, Lode Runner, Rescue on Fractalus, and...oh damn. I had a ton of games, thanks in no small part to my uncle, who was a dirty, dirty software pirate.

The 2600 had tons of great games. One thing that's amazing, in retrospect, is how Activision managed to be so successful. Atari themselves would try to port much larger and more complex arcade games to the console, and often the results weren't really great. Activision would do something similar (unlicensed, of course) but tweak the gameplay and audio/visual side to make it work better on the Atari, and ended up with a fairly ridiculous string of consistently great games. Atari 2600 Pole Position and Battlezone were kinda lame, but Activision's versions (Enduro and Robot Tank) are still fun to play today. Same with Kaboom! which was basically an improved version of that old Atari arcade game where (if memory serves) you had to collect balloons or something. And while the home version of Defender was decent, I put way more time into Chopper Command.
Adventure is still amazing, although I'm hesitant to go back to it frequently because one of my strongest memories is how weird (and maybe a little frightening) the game was to me as a child. Anyway, I just stumbled on this and it's pretty neat: (
http://www.warrenrobinett.com/inventing_adventure/) I've never actually played Rocky's Boots, but the other game using that engine (Robot Odyssey) is one of my favorite games of all time and it's interesting that its tech could be traced back to Adventure.

Oh man I loved adventure on the 2600. I played that for hours and hours on level 3 which was the highest level and mixed things up. Did any of you find the easter egg? Its the first one in game history. There is also an update called indenture. Same game but updated with tons of new areas and stuff. I still play both to this day. Never finish indenture yet though.
Back on topic I liked superman at first but yeah I got bored with it. Finding the 3 bridge pieces, arresting criminals and putting lois in her secret room got old quick. The only other games I really never got into was the sword quest series...never understood them at all. And did anyone ever win the contest?

For Atari, H.E.R.O.
Man, I loved HERO. But I played this version...

I remember thinking the little lights and waving water were so mysterious and atmospheric back then.
