You mean like Nioh? ;)
Nioh's dirty little secret is that it's a hodgepodge inspired by Team Ninja's own history of bastard hard action/Onimusha as well as Dark Souls, but point taken. Some really good games owe their existence to Dark Souls, like Hollow Knight and I dunno, Nethack? Oh wait, I've got my causality mixed up again.

I find it interesting no one's mentioned Minecraft. I wasn't particularly blown away by it, but I know a good idea executed well when I see it. Wasn't most of the community enamoured with the game at some point?

TTLG got in on it from the pre-alpha or alpha version, and I thought that was 2009 or I might have listed it. (I did list it in the games I've obsessed over thread.) Wiki is saying the alpha release was early 2010 though, so it probably should be listed. We had some good times on the servers in its heyday, and some of the mods really let you get obsessively into it. It had the potential to have great adventure maps, but most of them were targetting a young crowd. But some of them were amazing game experiences by themselves. I love the idea of an open world and broad objectives that you just do yourself that the game itself doesn't even police. Paradox grand strategies and Minecraft were great for that.

Played it for a month, then I'd had enough. It's only good if your the "creator type", which I am not. All I liked was destroying other peoples stuff.

Terraria is much more deserving of a spot on my Games of the Decade list than Minecraft. While Minecraft did have a feeling of scope and some level of wow-factor the first time I logged in, it IMO lacks severely in the gameplay department especially compared to Terraria.

I can't remember every game I played in the last 10 years, but Dark Souls is definitely the game of the decade for me.

Minecraft was only really playable (1) being on a server with friends (where it was more about just hanging out with them in this shared world you could build in and go on little mini-quests together), (2) with mods, (3) playing fan maps (also better with friends, but then your pool of people is less).

I seem to have ended up with 11:
Fallout: New Vegas
My favourite Fallout game. Great writing and world-building, while being first-person, which forces me to favour it over the originals.
I really liked how the world, factions and characters felt alive and believable.
Dark Souls
Yes, I loved this series as well. I can't quite decide which specific game in the series is my favourite, as I liked them all.
Vermintide 1/2
My favourite multiplayer game of the period. Combines the rich Warhammer lore with beautiful graphics, well-designed levels, and really fun combat mechanics.
The first game had more interesting levels, whereas the second has more options and more refined gameplay.
Return of the Obra Dinn
An amazing, unique experience. A really inventive new concept combined with good writing and awesome music.
Doom (2016)
This managed to throw back to what made the classic shooters such as the original Doom great, while managing to find a good balance between classic gameplay and modern innovations.
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
There haven't really been any tactical stealth games since Commandos and Desperados, and Mimimi managed to not only revive the genre, but managed to innovate on it in an interesting setting with well-written characters.
Dishonored
The return of the Immersive Sim and the closest thing to a modern Thief game that we have.
A well-designed setting and good stealth gameplay, which I somehow feel I should have liked more than I did. I feel like it was a solid, competent game, but somehow lacked that shine to make it stand out as much as it maybe should have. I really need to replay it (and actually get around to playing the second one.)
Divinity Original Sin 1
Only in Rivellon. I'm not usually the biggest fan of turn-based games, but the elemental magic system made combat in Original Sin very interesting, combined with a well-written world and some humour.
A shame that their decisions regarding armour made the combat in the second game feel like a chore instead.
Prey
This is another problematic Arkane game. I feel like what could have been a great game was let down by poor combat, completely un-interesting enemy design (apart from the Mimics), and just not enough good characters.
Deus Ex 3/4
These were overshadowed by their predecersor.
The gameplay was mostly good (though I didn't like the way XP system pushed you to play a certain way, e.g. hack everything), and the setting was competent and sometimes interesting, plus it tried to do the classic sci-fi thing of examining the clash between technology and culture, but it just couldn't hold up to the amazing writing of the original game.
Mostly good world-building let down by a poor main story.
Life Goes On
Every list needs an obscure indie game, and this one is mine.
A unique concept for a puzzle game, well-executed and with really well-designed levels which naturally teach you each new mechanic without hand-holding.
