Hi All,
Just been reading through the Gameinformer coverage on Thief 4 at (
http://www.gameinformer.com/p/thief.aspx) http://www.gameinformer.com/p/thief.aspx
Looks interesting, not keen on Focus and there are a few questions I'd like answered before parting with any money for it.
But then I found a replay of The Dark Project on site, (
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2013/03/23/replay-thief-the-dark-project.aspx) http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2013/03/23/replay-thief-the-dark-project.aspx
I'm not sure how I managed to sit through it without throwing my PC out of the window, they paid no attention to whether they could be seen, paid no attention the sound of approaching footsteps, apparently didn't know what water arrows were for, didn't realise walking over tiles was noisy and consequently reloaded a lot while all the time making jokes about the genre, dated graphics yadda yadda and generally talking over the sounds they should be listening to and not looking where they were going.
I was pretty awful when I started playing thief but I was never that bad
I mean if you are going to do a playthrough thats supposed to show whether the game stands up today at least RTFM first.
If they are the target market for Thief 4, count me out

Esme, haven't you taken a really good look at the goings on around the internet and media? The problem is that "they" are damn near most of the people out there.

I know, I've practically given up on gaming because of the mediocre crap these people think makes a good game.
Just had a twitter conversation with the guy who did the article
Quote:
@BenjaminReeves Watched your Thief playthrough, you paid no attention to sounds/being seen & you were handed your ass, try paying attention
Quote:
@staringatclouds yeah, that playthough was a mess, because we couldn't really hear the game. Thanks for being a asshole though:)
maybe they shouldn't have talked all the way through it then, I dunno just a thought.
Quote:
@BenjaminReeves I'm not the one dissing the entire game because I didn't bother to RTFM & if pointing that out makes me an asshole so be it
Sounds like a guy who cares about what he's doing doesn't it, still I suppose he gets paid regardless

I laughed.
But then I cried.

I think it ought to be illegal to play THIEF like that...Punishment is definitely required for their mockery and degradation of the THIEF experience....The fact that people with this type of mentality were chosen to demonstrate THIEF, is utterly scary.
Hi Esme...:)

Hi Vae
I think punishment is a little harsh, but this guys a journalist, he's supposed to do some basic research to justify his paycheck and he didn't, he could have picked a playthrough at random from youtube and got a better example of how the game compares with modern games.
If they've developed Thief 4 using that standard of gameplay when evaluating the originals then Thief 4 is going to suck and suck hard.
However, I'll try to be optimistic and assume they had players who knew how to play.
-- EDIT --
Correction he's not a journalist, he's the Associate Editor for Game Informer :nono:

Touche! - oh wait - you mean he's an editor.
We're still supposed to be doing some Game Informing though, right?
The other thing that stuck was apparently there's some context to the whole Garrett is too feminine thing that GI, err, forgot to report.

So this is how Game Informer demonstrates THIEF to the world, thus damaging the minds of countless many with a sorry misrepresentation of THIEF...Punishment is required for balance.

It does make my skin crawl to hear these guys merrily wisecracking about how "lame" the game is, but I have to wonder: if I'd been like these guys and waited until the present day to play TDP for the first time, would I have found it boring, too? My deep fondness for the Thief series is largely a nostalgic thing; I love it like I do because it's been part of my life for so long. I think the series is terrific because I thought it was terrific 15 years ago -- and that early experience has stuck with me. But if it weren't for that, who knows how the games would have struck me in later years. I can only speculate.
If anything, this obnoxious playthrough is an interesting thought exercise. These guys are loons, but I can't shake the suspicion that they make some objectively good points. They suck at the game, to be sure, but they also make some oddly cutting remarks that make me think "how dare you," and "good god, you're right," in equal measure. Some of their most offensive observations are also their most accurate.
