gah! i recently reinstalled windows 2k, and then went to reinstall morrowind. also figured i'd start a brand new charcter since i didnt save my previous.
inside the boat, loads. then when i follow the guy and he leads me to the exit, i try to use the exit from the ship and.......computer hang. its wierd. the computer doesnt respond at all. but using my second computer i can still access the first ones drives over the network so its still running, just the game isnt responding or anything. no laoding screen or anything appears. i've tried everything i can think of.
i need help!

Try uninstalling the game, wiping any leftover game directories and reinstalling. Always the first resort.
After that, I have no idea.
FYI, I have Windows 98, and the game runs fine, bar the odd crash to desktop.

Exile can help you on that. There's something you can download for Win2k... I just forgot what it was.

Make sure you have the Windows service packs and also make sure you load the latest Windows 2000 video drivers for your card. And just incase, make sure you have the latest Morrowind patch! ;)

Ania: done that multiples times already
RyushiBlade: it worked before without downloading anything
Striker: i do all that just as part of win reinstall.
Like I said. I already tried everything i can think of. Drivers already up to date, swap file set to 1024mb, multiple reinstalls of morrowind purging everything including my registry each time, patches and no patches, installing tribunal since i just got it recently too, everything.
The key thing, is the game load and run that first scene flawlessly. Its when I try to leave that scene and get topside on the boat the it hangs. So its something with the game itself I think, with its data files maybe. But what I cannot guess

gah! i recently reinstalled windows 2k
Do a low-level format. Install SP2, but not SP3. If the problem continues, try to shut off that network you've got going for a while and see if that helps. If it really is a problem in the game and a file is corrupted, see if you can get a list of MD5sums somewhere and check them up to the files in question.

this is what i dont understand though. i did do a low level format before reinstalling. and when i originally installed the game i had sp3 installed beforehand then too.

I had an idea. Borrow a friend's computer, install MW on it and make your character. Save the game, and put it into the saves directory on your own pc, then start MW and load your game. Who knows, it might work- if it is something in the char creation process that is making it crash, this will bypass it.
