Hi,
I'm trying to get a (mostly) non-lethal playthrough. For some reason, though, every time I finish the first Hell's Kitchen mission, in the debriefing Anna says I killed everyone in Clinton Castle, and as a result I can't get my equipment from the armory.
The first time through, after coming up through the secret tunnel under Castle Clinton, there were dead NSF everywhere and the doors were open and/or smashed in. Talking to Anna, she said I'm not like Paul and not afraid to kill. After completing the mission and being only given a multitool, I reloaded and tried again.
This second time through, I made sure that all the guards were unconscious. I only used the crossbow, the prod charger, and the baton (which, as far as I can tell, renders them unconscious). This time, after emerging from Castle Clinton, the guards were still alive, and I had to pick the lock to get out. Anna then remarked that I had too much restraint and shouldn't be afraid to kill them. So I figured I was fine. But sure enough, at the debriefing, Anna still tells Manderley that I should be an assassin and that I left Hell's Kitchen like a graveyard.
I have no idea why it's doing this, unless other NPCs killing guards around me is the same as me killing them. Any ideas?

Er. I think there's possibly a trigger in the castle that you are activating, which tells the game that you have used non-lethal tactics when in fact you haven't. Sorry, it's been a while since I played it.
Anyone else remember the trigger?

It's shitty scripting: it SHOULD be counting corpses due to "player", but instead it just counts corpses, so when Anna Navarre charges into castle clinton and gets her murderin' face on, they all get blamed on you.
The best way to avoid this is to (perhaps hilariously) block her passage into castle clinton using a medium unbreakable crate or two (super arms help here), then go in through the secret side entrance. This way she can be angry and murderous all she wants but she can't reach anybody, so you can tranq/stun them all and get pacifist credit.

I discovered that if you move an unconscious body, it will count as dead for the purpose of game checking the state of Castle Clinton later. So even if Anna says you're too soft, if then you move some bodies about(i.e. to blow up the chest in the kiosk) you will still get shit from Carter later.

Shit, yeah, I just checked: picking up and then dropping a corpse wipes its tag, which the missionscript uses to distinguish between battery park terrorists and castle clinton terrorists.
Wow, that IS bad scripting...

That makes sense. I had picked up an unconscious body and hid it in an air shaft. The second time through I didn't, but I might have still accidentally picked one up while trying to loot it.

Maybe the game is assuming that whoever's doing the post-battle sweep won't know if the terrorist was from Castle Clinton or anywhere else. Having an unreliable narrator as it were means it's actually
really really good scripting.

heh: s'not a bug, it's a feature!
Except in this case the missionscript uses the tag exclusively to distinguish between castle clinton terrorists and battery park terrorists, with no tag being interpreted as "no terrorists".
So it would be equivalent to a guy wandering around seeing lots of unconscious terrorists and going "Hmmm..lots of unconscious terrorists, good....but I can't seem to find anyone specifically from castle clinton..oh god, that means he must have gibbed all the bodies. That monster!"
:p
