I recently came into possession of Ultima I but without any instructions. I have no idea how to cast spells or many other basic to playing the game. Can anyone point me to a web site that explains the basic game play. I have seen the walkthrough and that really is not what I want. I will attempt to play the game on my own but need to figure out the basics. Thanks.

The walkthrough is all you need I think. I just started too to play this game. To cast spells you need to form words with the runes you found so far. The words are listed in the walkthrough. To form a word you click on each rune and it will appear in a location, right to the compass. So far I don't have enough mana to cast anything so I can't tell you more.

Ultima I, or Ultima _Underworld_ I ??
We can help you with the latter; some folks can probably even help you with the former come to think of it, but as the two games are worlds apart (so to speak :) it will help if we clarify which game we're talking about!

Just for the record, how did you manage to get a copy with no instructions? It always sounds dodgy when people say that without volunteering a reasonable explanation.

Gee, Mr. Cat...I didn't realize you were the head of the software police, but seeing how I OWE you an explanation, I got the game at a garage sale.

Oops; I forgot about this thread. No offense intended (unless you were lying, in which case offense is definitely intended :)
I'm just a gamer who hates software piracy, and gets especially upset at the idea of Looking Glass games being pirated (no matter how old)
And you must admit, there aren't many ways to legitimately acquire a game with no manual, so it _does_ sound suspicious when anyone says this.
Coincidentally enough, UUW1 has apparently now been released on a PC Gamer CD. I've also heard people talking about it being available for download, but I haven't heard whether it's become legitimate freeware, or if it's an exclusive deal with PC Gamer but people have just grabbed the file from the CD and stuck it online anyway.
As such, I think all the required instructions have probably been made available already. Someone mentioned a PDF of the manual, which should cover everything...

Sorry, I am getting a bit testy in my old age. I do get PC Gamer and checked out the copy of UW1 and it plays fine for me, but if you go to their website, there are a lot of unhappy customers who either can't get the games to play or in some cases claim the cd actually damaged their cd-rom players. I have seen the walkthrough of this game and what seems to be a abridged version of the manual, but it doesn't even contain basic information as far as obtaining mana and casting spells. I just thought that maybe somewhere out there on the web, there would be a full copy of the manual I could download.

Laurentiu: what country are you from ?
This has nothing to do with UW at all; just that your name is strangely familiar...

BTW, it's nice to see that people still start playing UW for the first time. I thought our cause was lost...
