You start picking up ammo for the TC-5 way before you can use it, so even though it eats ammo like candy I never had an ammo shortage.
It's not an all purpose weapon. It's only good at hitting slow moving things on its powerful setting, like turrets or robots.
One limitation is that Rumblers run really fast, so there's no way to get to a good range to unload a fusion cannon on one usually, unless you get the drop on it. So it seems like having a high enough agility to outrun a Rumbler, shooting backwards with the TC-5, would be very useful.
I destroyed the Many by using Speed hypos and the TC-5. You don't have to get clear shots at the stars. Just keep unloading as you run in circles like a madman and they'll eventually die from splash damage, then the brain dies, then you run like a madman into the hole and never even have to fight a single baddie in the room. Don't get hit much either. Speed seems like the TC-5s best friend. And, same deal with the end battle. Speed hypo from station to station, fire a few times, done. Easiest fight in the game. The brain battle and the end battle turn into absolute nothing easypie with speed hypos and the TC-5, in my oppinion.
Plus, it's just so pleasing shooting a star trek torpedo-esque glowing energy bolt at something.

P.S. Do you think that with AgilityMAX and a speed hypo, you could outrun one of the DEATH bolts from your own TC-5, run in front of it, and get hit by it? They move so slowly! It seems very possible. You might not even need AgilityMAX... Just a speed hypo...

For the love of god, stop sticking MAX onto random words. Makes you sound like a tweaker.

Your own projectiles can't collide with you. Dark Engine rule.

You used it to kill things. Therefore, it's good. Thread over.

But a lot of people seem to think its useless. On a lot of the tutorials out there people are like "Grenade launcher is all you need! Fusion Cannon is worthless! Yeehaw!" and I didnt even use the grenade launcher when I played through the game. Not once.

I didn't know that. Interesting, if not completely unrealistic.
As far as the Fusion Cannon goes, I used it in one game and after that decided I was better off recycling the ammo and using the CMs elsewhere. Besides, all you really need for the brain is a pistol (or a wrench, if you have a few hours to kill).

Fusion cannon is probably the most efficient way to take out monkeys.

No, the wrench is.

It's a nice BFG but I have to say I rarely use it, except when I want some fun change. When I play "serious" I usually stick to AR and EMP rifle. The FC is not worthless, but it's not as effective.
