Ran a windows optimisation program on my PC, installed the Float32 mod thingy, de-fragged my hard drive and tweaked the settings a bit and am now finally able to play it with FDL.
For want of a better acronym, OMFG.
It's like playing a different game.
Anyone who says that graphics are not important to games seriously ought to try playing this both ways.
Before, the game was cool enough, and had me very interested for sure, but now with FDL, the difference is incredible.
The moment it really hit home was when I was on my way back to the first trader from the other side of the railway bridge (cheers for the tip about the hole in the fence you can sneak through, whoever it was) and it was pitch black with occasional lighting and I suddenly see a load of white dots moving around, so decide to investigate.
A well timed lightning flash reveals 4 boars moving up the crest of a hill towards me and I promptly soil myself and scrabble to get my shotgun ready, realise I'm packing the AK74, have to settle for the silent pistol in order to conserve my scant AK ammo and get gored to shit in the ensuing fracas.
A genuine unmissable gaming experience.
So yes, full dynamic lighting then.
Accept no substitute.

It is gorgeous indeed, I didn't need any tweaks to run the game that way and get average 50+ FPS.

I practically had to fool my computer into believing it was good enough to run it, then bribe it too.

It is easy to fool your computer; the BIOS. ;):p

I was testing the modified shaders, but I don't know, Float32 doesn't seem to noticeably improve the framerate. :erg:

Float32 is a fake, it just tweaks some options and decrease image quality so it become a bit faster. You can achieve the same effect if you manually adjust video settings. At least I read so in a lot of places on the net.

That's damn strange, I can't see any noticeable improvement in performance, but I can't tell the image quality would be noticeably worse either. Maybe I'm just getting blind or something or the difference is really insignificant.

Nah, there's differences between the shader files. The latest version doesn't even come with a user.ltx file.

I just got 2 extra gigs of ram today and I can run stalker on full everything now including dynamic lighting which I couldn't before. It makes a tremendous difference but makes the fps on my machine very crazy. Sometimes it runs smoothly then out of no where I get a large fps drop. I guess this is because stalker wasn't created very well. I also get lag spikes when there is lighting strikes because it lights up the entire map.

The jerky lightning strikes are a problem for many, there is a mod which disables lightning which would stop the jerkiness but then, well, you wouldn't get lightning.
