Playing through DX again, this time on Hard trying to get through it without killing anyone.
Well, I have gotten past the first time you visit New York and I haven't killed a single person thus far, and I have only knocked out about 4 guys (and only then because I didn't want to limit myself to only the very main objectives just because I didn't want to be seen by anyone) and I haven't been seen by a single enemy (all knock outs were from sneaking up behind them un-noticed).
After all this hard work what kind of path does the game put me on? The path of the killer. All the Unatco people are complementing me on how I am 'cleaning house' and my guy talks about all the people he has killed in his talk to General Carter, at which point Carter denys the extra ammunition.
This is very frustrating and annoying.. go through all this effort of not harming ANYTHING and get rewarded by being called a mass murderer?
I know exactly why it does this (bad scripting/AI. Enemy gets killed by a unatco and it automatically assumes I did it), but it is still frustrating.

Well, why are you playing the non-lethal way anyway? The game certainly doesn't recognize the difference. So you must be playing it for your own challenge, for yourself. In that case, you know you didn't kill anyone, so you should be satisfied. Who cares if you're denied ammo, you don't use it anyway.

absolutely necessary ... actually I didn't use those until Castle Clinton. Paul and Carter were very happy with me; everyone else seemed a little unnerved and that I was like Paul.
Anyway, two things come to mind: How did you knock them out? Maybe the game counts some kinds of knockouts (riot prod) as kills, and others (the tranq darts) not. The other thing is that they might be a lot more picky on Hard and treat any sort of violence as killing.

The trigger for Carter's extra ammo doesn't seem to be whether or not you've killed anybody. It seems to be where you go. Go in the front or over the wall at Clinton Castle you're labeled a killer.

If you triggered the fire fight at Castle Clinton then the body counts by UNATCO troops count towards you.

Way to stop fire fight:
Go through the back entrace, located where you start Castle Clinton, and the death count can be 0.
There is no way I can make it through Deus Ex without killing anyone. I have to kill people. Killing people on this game is far more rewarding than any other game I have ever played.

I know all the back-ways and secrets, don't worry about that =P
I used the riot prod, but only a total of 4 times for the entire time.
And yes the game does recognise it if you go this path, I have done it before on Medium and Easy (though not so extreme).

The fire fight was triggered without me going in the front way, or even going anywhere near the front way (it was never in my FOV up until I went to talk to Anna for my new assignment). The triggers are far too broad.. if you go within 50-feet of that complex (back, front, sides - doesn't matter) the fight is triggered and you get the wrap for it even if you were never there.

And that is the attitude I have had for a while towards it, but it is still kinda frustrating when everyone in the game treats you like some mass murderer, talking (or yelling) to you about how many people you killed.

What I meant to say was, the game doesn't recognize the difference after the first two missions. I usually only play non-lethal the first two missions to get the bonuses, then go on killing sprees with my sniper rifle.
Heh, I see what you're saying ImmortalG. I just trying to help out. :)

Stealth is too hard and not worth doing. Deus Ex is no Thief. The playing sneaky on Deus Ex is like sneaking around on Metal Gear Solid.
The enemy sees you, someone hits the alarm somethimes, they chase you around(and shoot at you somethimes hitting you) and you evade the ememy for a while until the alarm goes off and the ememy stops looking for you like nothing has happened.
