In order to make gains on Eastwick as he makes his way, and get into the House of Blossoms through the opportunity he provides, the player can choose to
race parkour-style across the rooftops to reach a spot in
time, or the player can choose to miss
that opportunity (and probably conversations or other information fed to the player along that path) to get in the HoB by another means at another time. Without transcripts or key words memorized, it's not easy grabbing sources. :o
EDIT: I'm glad I found this particular article quickly enough, and it does repeat many things the others were saying:

Quote:
As he does so the Clock Tower strikes midnight in the distance, and Garrett's narration warns us that he'll need to act fast to make it to Eastwick's location before being locked out of the destination. What happens next makes us squirm uncomfortably in our seats.
Cue a short high-action sequence straight out of Mirror's Edge. Garrett arrows one guard with his bow, vertical takedowns another, and then sprints through alleyways; vaulting moving carts and clambering over pallets as if stealth were just a suggestion. Time limits call for desperate measures though... or do they?
We quizzed Lead Gameplay Designer Marc Benoit about this very thing after our demo (a demo that ended with a similarly funnelled sequence - more on that later) and it turns out that it all comes down to personal choice. If you miss the midnight deadline it's not level over. You'll have squandered your chance to follow Eastwick through a gate, yes, but that just means you'll have to find an alternative path.
In the demo, it's less like Eavesdropping, with a fail for missing the listening post when the clock finishes striking 12, and just treated as a missed opportunity, so that's an improvement in general. It sucks that we can't just make our own way at a run if we want without going into a Mode. Forced parkour is the price of getting through the gate behind Eastwick. Thumbs down.
Focus is a limited resource per mission, so I'm guessing there's some stamina or mana-like draining indication, and so far, no means to "charge" it up during the mission, which makes some of us happy. There's also the "Swoosh" dash-mode, but the part that bothers me is that the parkour sequence has been described as kind of a zone, so I don't know if the player can saunter along the same route or go off the path to take in the sights and sounds and/or some loot. I hope it's not a preset obstacle course to match animations so the parkour syncs up.

Here's what (
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/04/04/first-look-thief/) RPS had to say:
Quote Posted by Rock Paper Shotgun
The rooftop pursuit is a race against time. A clock is striking twelve, the sound thundering across the district, and Garrett must reach the red light before the chimes end and the door to the brothel is locked for the night. Good grief, I thought, do I really want a time limit in my Thief game? Do I really want to sneak around another brothel?
The latter question is still on the table but the time limit can be dismissed. Fail to reach the door in time and the mission won’t begin again – this isn’t about finding the perfect free-running line – but the easiest entrypoint will be closed. Maybe you’ll have to find an entrance somewhere deeper, in the City’s underbelly where it keeps its underclass, or perhaps, with a little ingenuity, it’ll be possible to unlock the gate.
I don't see anything in jtr's quoted text or RPS's preview to suggest that the race will require a special movement mode. As far as I can tell from the information so far, it's simply a door that will close at midnight, and if that's how the player wants to get in, he's going to have to move quickly.
We know that the player is going to have more fluid movement in general this time around, so I don't see why they should need some special mode.

In the GameInformer magazine article, it says, "Garrett moves with practiced swiftness... From the roof, Garrett can see the red lights of the House of Blossoms off in the distance... Garrett barrels over the city's skyline, diving from roof to roof until he slides down to street level again. He bounds over merchant tables and under wagons, then dives through the window of a nearby building... This tightly choreographed sequence perfectly displays Garrett's skill as a master thief. It would make a fine opening cutscene for Eidos Montreal's reboot to the Thief franchise, except it's not a cutscene. Eidos Montreal is working hard to empower players and make them feel like a skilled master thief."

Sounds potentially quite similar to Assassin's Creed-like, "Hold (X) to do all sorts of cool stuff while running, including simplified climbing while in this parkour-y mode." Of course, maybe Garrett's movement is the same as in Thief 1/2 and the writer is just over-embellishing things, but I doubt it.
The full GI article is at bottom of this page, if haven't seen before: (

Not certain how much like AC the Thief game is implied to be in this report; but I remember when my son played the first AC game, I liked the ease and "flow" of physical movement he was getting from the character and I immediately imagined Garrett being as nimble as that.
Darkness_Falls on 16/5/2013 at 21:20
Le sigh...
When I first heard this parkoury nimbleness in Thief, I immediately imagined Garrett climbing to the tops of clock towers and jumping from there into bales of hay for no other reason than to reveal more of the world map. Clock Tower #2 of 7 found.
More seriously, though, I enjoyed it for AC the first few times I tried it. After that, I saw it as one of the several hand-holding and gamey mechanics AC has. I wish for it to never enter the Thief franchise. I want complete, non-automated control of Garrett.
How you're still on the fence with buying Thief 4 (where you need to see more) is beyond me, considering how much you lovingly embrace every bit of news that's revealed :) Poor EM doesn't even get a commitment to buy from you at this point?? How is that possible? *insert stunned smiley here*

Darkness_Falls, there seems no doubt that Garrett will be able to move more fluidly in this installment. What that means on a scale of mirror's edge to assassin's creed to something completely different, however, no-one has any basis for knowing yet.
Depending on how they implement it, more fluid movement could be quite good. Mantling was a pretty amazing ability back in 1998, too. All of a sudden, the level architecture was not a maze of restrictions, but a land of opportunities. We'll just have to wait and see what this is like.
(EDIT: I would hope it does not need saying, but just in case: I would not like the movement to be like Assassin's Creed either.)
Darkness_Falls on 16/5/2013 at 21:35
Yep, I agree, Chade; it remains to be seen. My mind couldn't help but make the AC link for now, though... so I sit in mild fear until the gameplay video is released in a few days ;)

It is beyond me why you can't read my PoV without adding bias nonsensical remarks. As Chade said, it is pretty obvious that Garrett will be able to move more fluidly in the new game and the fact that I like it is a personal point of view. I can accept that you prefer T1/2 movement only. We're all different.

Chade, getting every skeptic the best citations is a massive chore in time-consumption alone. People aren't pulling stuff out of thin air or some rank orifice but recalling a muddled collection of repeated impressions. There's a lot we don't know, but there is a definite pattern no matter the optimism or pessimism. The "journalists'" wording is what we are going by. Even when they put a happy spin on it it's still not sounding good. Without enough time, there is no inclination to work for skeptics who are just joining us, especially when you are just as likely to find the information yourself with a similar search if you really wanted the information, not just wanting to challenge the opposition. Recalling the right keywords, like "Mirror's Edge", and "free-running", take awhile when we've already moved on.

1) Garrett is much more lithe and acrobatic and has new abilities

there's a free-running section where Garrett bounds through a marketplace and does parkour tricks over benches and stalls,
EM chose to show it this way, journalists chose to speak of it similarly if you see it repeated from one article to the next, and we've expressed our distaste with no rebuttal if everyone got it wrong. There's plenty of time to rework the demo if there is no free-running section or parkour mode. How can it not be a mode, just 'cause they aren't calling it one? If I go fast in a Thief game, I just go fast, so where are the acrobatic moves and agility springing from in a way that surprises viewers of the demo if not some mode kicking in?
There are many articles about the press demo. Find the one that opposes what we say, and leaves no room for easy interpretation. Your turn.
