Not to be out of fashion but, I thought Deadly Shadow had many moments of decent immersion. Unfortunately, the 1st person movement and limited exploration crippled any meaningful replay. A shame really, but it has obviously been overly documented.
:p :p :p

Obviously EM is entitled to change up the franchise a little bit, but there comes a point when it doesn't become Thief anymore; I saw that Yahtzee video a few people have linked to and I completely agree with him.
Most of the stuff in the poll wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Improved melee might be a good thing. I mean in the originals it took a couple sword swings to kill stuff, I would imagine even with armor in real life guards would die/be incapacitated from one or two direct sword hits. Also like the breaks to 3rd person. Didn't hurt TDS or DXHR. The reboot storyline would certainly be interesting, I'm a little apprehensive about that. And Stephen Russell's absence of course.

Each to their own. I see no reason to include 'melee' in a Thief game, which is allegedly all about stealth. An isolated confrontation between NuGarrett and a guard or two might be inevitable, but he's a thief, not a frakkin' warrior. I would imagine that if all else fails (attempts to escape or hide) NuGarrett might have to make a stand, but pitting him against more than one or two guards or City Watch without giving him recourse to escape would be changing the dynamics of the game for me. In other words, I wouldn't appreciate that. Thief is
supposed to be about stealth, though EM has already stated that they're endeavoring to make NuThief a stealth-based-action game. Yeah, right. I'd much rather EM give us the option to ghost the whole game without being automatically forced into confrontations. Seems they're determined to just keep fixing what wasn't broken in the first place.

Once again, a matter of opinion.
Any break from 1st to 3rd person is unwelcome to many Taffers, and I'm definitely one of them. Regardless of EM's weak excuses for incorporating this automatically forced change of perspective, I can see no logical reason for them to do so. It's immersion breaking and distracting. As far as TDS is concerned, it didn't exactly get rave reviews from the die-hard Taffers here; in fact, the
forced change of perspective was a major sore point with a lot of us along with a score of other aspects changed or dumbed-down in that game. And DX:HR was a totally different game; you're comparing apples to oranges. I may have loved HR to death, but I still didn't like many of the aspects incorporated into that game, auto 1st to 3rd person perspective changes being one of the. I'd really rather not see EM release T4:HR, thank you very much.

As far as I remember, and I realise that being relatively ancient my memory is automatically suspect
TDS didn't ever force a third person perspective, you could play in first person all the way through, I'm pretty sure that's what I did

You're right, Esme; edited. I misspoke. I still didn't like the 3rd person anyway - even if you were given the choice. Imo there was way too much wrong with TDS to enable me to enjoy the game; it was a perfect example of game developers trying to fix something that wasn't broken, instead of just upgrading certain aspects of it.

That was the core problem with TDS. The attempt to upgrade certain aspects of it is what broke the entire thing. Remember, by that point ISA was staffed by quite a few ex LGS Thief devs. They didn't have any purposeful intentions to dumb down the series they made. What they wanted to do was put the same style of gameplay into a realtime lit environment.
...which ended up breaking tons of stuff because the renderer they had was crap, the engine they were using was PC-centric, and their target platform (the Xbox) didn't have enough ram to do the new tech justice. They were too far along into development to scrap the whole thing completely and start fresh, so ISA ended up having to cut tons of gameplay features just to get the game working with what they had.
The fact it ended up as good as it did is proof that they were a talented bunch of people.

I've tried to follow up as much as I can and until there's more actual gameplay footage, artifical intelligence is what I really get nervous about when a new game is designed, will I be able to A.I. surf, how is it better let alone if improved and really hope screen will be as minimally cluttered as possible with huds, like I just hope it will feel simple and meet up with todays technology to feel as if its 'ahead of time' kind of feeling, so was hard to decide where to place my vote, third person and first person view dilemma came second place on my list of what concerns to me as well.

And IMO Dishonored handily proves that DX:HR didn't need its 3rd person shenanigans. At all. And it did harm DX:HR, IMO, even though I enjoy the game anyway.

That kind of ladder-climbing needs to go the hell away in gaming that isn't 2D.
