We were told not to listen to what was being said...and here we are again...yet from everything I've seen or heard, this game is even FURTHER removed from the originals.
...
Where they're taking the new Thief though, there is no way to simply patch up some annoyances. To fix T4 would be akin to skin grafts and limb replacement.
Hence, the community dread.

NH, as soon as I heard there would be no rope arrow in DS and also load zones, I lost interest. No amount of patches could ever fix these deficiencies.
As the new game gives us back vertical movement and excludes load zones, I'd say it is less removed from the originals.
It all depends on our personal preferences, of course.

There will be no Pagans and Hammerites (probably), I don't think humor will fit in this new Thief universe so it is safe to assume there will be no humor (which is pretty important for me), no Stephen Russell, no elemental crystals as we know them. And I thinwhen they reveal, we'll see more and more departures from the original titles.
So you are saying despite all of these, because they give us rope arrows (which actually they don't, they give us a thing called claw and we don't know anything about it yet. If there are predetermined points and we can not freely use them, there is no point) and exclude loading zones, Thief 4 will be more Thief than TDS?

I can't really comment on the 'probably' regarding other factions. They might appear; or be drawn upon... who knows yet. I think humour will appear from what the devs have said about Garrett's personality - but I only speculate as you do. I can live with another voice actor so long as he does a good job; I've never been disappointed with fan missions just because SR didn't voice them. I presume as time has passed elemental crystals have changed into other forms... I can live with this too. Vertical movement was what I wanted, and that's what I've got. I don't care if its a rope, vine or claw in name.
Our personal likes/dislikes in a game are what they are. That's just the way it is.

Thief should be a leader not a follower.
Yes!

I was talking about overall humour, not just Garrett's comments. I don't think we hear funny conversations anymore.
I can live with new VA too, but I will never be happy with it, something important has gone.
Elemental arrows has a magical, special feeling, If they keep this feeling while changing the forms of the crystals, then I would be fine but no, they are trying to make it realistic, too gimmicky. I don't know, I just don't like it.
Sure, name doesn't matter but as I said we don't know how we will use it yet.
Of course most of them are speculations and I will be happy If I am wrong in the end but it sounds like this game won't feel like Thief I know and love.
Yet, you didn't answer my question: They changed many things. You can live with new arrows, that does not mean you will be happy with them. I won't. If factions are gone (especially Hammerites), If humour is gone, If all the creatures and ghosts are gone along with the zombies (Hammer Haunts for example), would you still think new Thief is more Thief than TDS, just because of no loading zones and rope arrows? I know there are lots of Ifs here but they are possibilities and I think Em is taking this direction.

I believe Thief will be better than TDS, yes. But I do draw this conclusion from my own speculation and personal preferences, of course. Vertical exploration is one of the main elements I enjoy the most about this game; as I do with non-combat stealth, no load zones etc... pretty much everything we experience in the first two games, if you like, but didn't get in the third installment.
I can only add my own speculation on where EM's creative direction stands. To me, this installment is really more about Garrett himself and his role as a master thief. Stealing is the focus, rather than too much emphasis on previous factions etc. That is probably why the trailer shows us that quick "snatch", Garrett's cynical grin, and his feet as he steps very carefully toward his target etc. Its more about Garrett.... its more about thievery and the skills required to be good at it. Its more about you being Garrett as you play through the story that unfolds when he returns to the city after a long absence.
I also know and love the same Thief you do - I'm just open to new things. Time has passed after all; one would expect some changes. If there are no zombies, hammer haunts etc.... then that doesn't spell disaster for me, simply because I don't believe we must have these factions in order to enjoy this game. I have played fan missions where haunts and zombies were not included... I didn't miss them. In fact, zombies are my least favourite characters hehe. But I do like a "fright" and the devs have said there will be 'strange things'; (or words to that effect; can't remember the specific article sorry), so I can only speculate that there will still be dark and surreal elements to quench that desire.
As for overall humour; and your suggestion that there is none other than Garrett's personal ramblings... then I agree it would be sorely missed if this is the case and is likely to feel less of a Thief game. I am pretty confident, however, that humour IS in the game; but I only draw that conclusion from dev interviews about Garrett listening to conversations. Hopefully we'll hear the occasional guard moaning about how his feet ache, lol.
We can all only speculate at this point in time. I will be glad to watch the gameplay video when it is released - it should at least help answer some of our questions.

It doesn't seem to me that humor
could play a large part (if any) in T4 as the devs seem to want to make everything more realistic in showing the gritty, seamy, dirty side of this city and those who populate it; I don't see that there would be much of an opportunity to insert humor in such a bleak, dark setting - though of course I could be wrong. At least, that's the impression I have after reading/hearing/seeing the info EM has released on T4 to date. NuGarrett, according to those who were privileged to see the demo, lapses into monologues designed as a 'trainer' to help those who don't know what they're doing or where they're going, so I don't see much opportunity for any inserted humor there. (A serious, gag-me type of dumbing down, but what can ya do if you want to play this game but swallow and put up with it?) Also, humor is so subjective that what the T4 devs may think is funny may not strike some gamers as being so. Could be just another opportunity for epic fail, imo. Or not. Who knows at this point?
Will NuThief be more Thief than TDS? Uhhhhmmm,
no. It really
can't be, can it? NuThief is a reboot, not a prequel or sequel; EM has changed so much that their City and main character really don't really resemble that which made Thief what it was in the original games (
*insert 'imo' disclaimer here*). At least TDS remained consistent with the main arc of the Thief saga; the Keepers, Mechanists, Hammerites, prophecies, magic, etc., even considering that TDS was so dumbed-down and a disappointment, it still had continuity with the previous two games. Granted, at this point we really don't know to what extent the former factions of the original Thief will be included, but from what I've read/seen/heard from EM it looks (to me) as though NuThief has been stripped of most (if not all) of those elements so basically you're playing a NuGarrett who likes to steal stuff, has kewl NuToys, a kewl NuOutfit, kewl NuMoves, and goes up against an evil Baron. It seems that it will be a totally new game that only bears the title of Thief and the name of the main protagonist of the original Thief games. So no; in my opinion T4 will
not be 'more Thief than TDS'.
And it actually almost hurt to say that. :(

This is it for me. TDS was dumbed-down and a disappointment. Game over.
The fact that it had continuity with the previous games didn't do anything to lift my disappointment. DS just wasn't "fun" to play at all and immersion was lost.
Obviously, we all get our buzz from different things and I'm not disagreeing with your take on things; I'm just explaining mine. :)
