@nickie - it's near the end of the article linked in the OP.
Everyone has their own interpretation, but I don't see much of the original Garrett in the new way he's being portrayed. Feminine side? I can almost hear Stephen Russell's voice chuckling at the mere suggestion of that. The original Garrett wasn't a tough guy, but he also wasn't some nimble ballerina - jumping, leaping, and parkouring across the rooftops. In fact, he was probably a little clumsy, based partially on his skills with a sword. But he was confident and competent, and a wiseass. He was a fairly solitary guy, a loner who'd be more likely to walk right by you than enter into any kind of confrontation. He'd almost never act violently unless he was defending himself or if it was required for a job. He's basically a good person, but that doesn't mean he won't do some pretty crooked shit to get what he wants.
And he's not flashy, with weapons or attire. He'd never carry a bow like that, or wear eye makeup. He'd use the bare minimum array of tools to get any particular job done.
But hey, it's a reboot, so it's not really that Garrett anyway. I just can't figure out why they didn't just go with an entirely new character if they were going to change the existing one so much.

I see Gallagher saying 'there's a certain amount of the feminine in Garrett'. I don't see anything that says that Garrett is going to get in touch with this feminine side.

@SE - You don't think Garrett's basically a good guy? Saving The City multiple times? Continually helping friends and battling the forces of evil, etc.? Sure, some of it was for selfish reasons, but surely not all of it.
@nickie - Sounds like essentially the same thing to me. <shrug>

Understood. It doesn't to me though.

No. I'll quote myself from a (

Garrett is a THIEF. He is a criminal. Lordy lord I hate thieves in real life. They are scum.
In the Thief series Garrett is admittedly an anti-hero (we all agree on that I hope) but because he saves the City (world?) from, in order; an Evil God, a Religious Fanatic, an Insane Mutant, we consider him a hero. A bad guy brought in from the cold, redeemed by the greater acts.
But this is his
fate, not his choice.
Given the choice Garrett would continue to be a Thief, working for petty criminals, not stealing from the rich to give to the poor in a Robin Hood style, committing the occasional murder in order to steal and so on.
Don't get me wrong - I like the character
in and for the game, I enjoyed the games (DUH!), but I don't actually
like Garrett, for he is filth.

I wouldn't call Garrett scum or filth, he's a product of his upbringing and environment. He normally only steals from the rich (but gives to himself instead of the poor). He's not out assassinating people or running drugs or maintaining a prostitution ring. His crimes are mostly victimless - I don't see Bafford going hungry anytime soon, even without his scepter. I'll leave murder out of the argument because you don't have to play that way, and the game never requires you to kill anyone who's innocent or just a bystander.
He's also not just a petty thief, he seems to go after unique items - Bafford's scepter, The Horn of Quintus, Lord Randall's vase, The Sword - sure, he picks up some other valuables along the way but it's almost incidental.
I don't believe in fate, and Garrett probably doesn't either. At anytime during any of the games, he could have made the conscious choice to walk away and not get involved, despite constant pestering from The Keepers. In fact, I think the Keepers keep coming to him because they know in the end his conscience will force him to do the right thing. He also goes out of his way to help Cutty and Basso and Jenivere and Viktoria. He helps other minor characters as well, like Lotus and the ghost of Murus/Renault/Martello, even the Hammerite Priest in Bedfellows).
I think it's been mentioned by one of the LGS devs that Garrett doesn't necessarily even like stealing, and would like to get out of the racket. We know he's planning on retiring after getting The Eye for Constantine. He could give up "the life" pretty easily I think.

He steals from everyone. To get 100% loot you have to steal stuff from poorer people, servants, guards, etc.
And the reason for helping those people out is for is own gain - everything he does benefits him.
Of course he doesn't "like" stealing. It's dangerous!

Considering that we are dealing with a (
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CrapsackWorld) Crapsack World, he's practically a saint.
I've always thought he steals in part to spite the keepers. He seems to have a bit of a passive-aggressive thing going on whenever he interacts with them.

Product schmoduct. So is every criminal. I guess they're all nice guys really.
