I liked the story in Thief. The sorry and world building with all the hammer and keeper quotes was excellent. It's not heavy, it's not dramatic, but that's why it works.

I think games can easily get away with mediocre stories, and that's fine, because the story is empowered through player's interaction and participation.
Good story never hurts, though.

Sounds like lots of drama, but on the other hand people have pointed out that Thief's storylines were never really extraordinary.
And they didn't have to be. The first games' minimalist approach to storytelling brought out their strengths (gameplay, worldbuilding) as well as left things for imagination. For example, a mysterious secret organisation will look much less mysterious when you find out they are just a bunch of incompetent murderous idiots clinging to past power.

Oh, I need to get in touch with my feminine side. Garrett has no feminine side, what is he talking about?! What have they done with our poor Garrett!
Ahem, Garrett has whatever attributes the player gives him *stern look*

He's not a blank slate, he has a personality and in Thief 1, 2, 3 he is most definitely not feminine. He's a hard nosed m*therf@cker, extremely selfish, not "in touch" with a feminine side at all, a criminal and someone you'd not want to meet in a dark allley in your worst nightmares.
That's what makes him such a great character - he's one of the only real bad guys who is also the protagonist. Don't be under any illusions, this is not a hero, this is a definite antihero.

WTF is a feminine side? Feelings and stuff? What is this, the sixties?

I still haven't found the bit where it says he's going to get in touch with his feminine side.

I'd rather have 10 guard lines telling me what he does after work than 10 cutscenes of drama with characters I don't know or care about.
YUP TOTAAAALLLY AGREEEEE and I really, really hope the devs are on-board with that one. It's a stealth game, I want to find out what's going on by eavesdropping, not by watching myself have a soap opera.

I think they're trying to use feminine to mean "lean rather than stocky" and make him an agile, small-framed type (which is fine I never imagined Garrett as a huge bulky guy anyway that wouldn't make him the best sneak).
And possibly to have some grace. Well, a guy who can leap 50 feet after a triple jump must surely be graceful, no? :D
I'm not sure whether to agree. Feminine does *not* mean weak, but whether or not it suits Garrett... I think in personality he needs to be gruff, but I'm open to his skills being slightly moreso I guess.
