Brace yourself...
Quote:
"I've said this before and sometimes people misunderstand me," Gallagher said, "but there's a certain amount of the feminine in Garrett, he represents a lot of both [male and female.] The strength and elegance of the feminine, as opposed to the chest out, legs apart, 'I will save the world' [attitude]."
Quote:
"We definitely stepped back from that," he said. "Garrett's stance is actually based on ballet, because it's the quickest, most strongest way to move."
And on a different note, this...
Quote:
"Garrett's been challenging himself as a master thief for many years; the bigger the job, the harder the challenge. I think the biggest challenge for him is by taking [Erin's hook] that day, it's put him in a very strange position."
Im sorry, but how is this a bigger challenge than the legendary robbing of a God, like he did in The Dark project? They are clearly making this game for a new generation of emo wimpy boys. Oh, I need to get in touch with my feminine side. Garrett has no feminine side, what is he talking about?! What have they done with our poor Garrett!

Agreed. This whole thing about stealing someone's grappling hook is just dumb, I hope they come up with a better explanation and/or justification by release date.

Undoubtably it connects with the grappling hook game mechanic... It sends the message right at the start using it is critical, and I can almost imagine some voice overs when he can use it in-game in some scenes.

What if it's a literal dead guy returns to life - NuThief's sole haunt. No seriously, the villain as a haunt.

I don't know, Thief doesn't lend itself to story-driven drama all that well. We saw that in T3. It would be best to keep it mission-centric -- here's your briefing, here's your equipment, now go.
Well, a lot of people like thief 3's story. Me, for instance. Which is not to say it was perfect, by any means. A lot of things were a bit screwy in thief 3, but IMO this was more due to the development difficulties they had, rather then anything wrong with the high level concept of the game.
That said, I completely understand your skepticism, and I do think that Garrett's personality makes it difficult to give him any protracted interaction with other characters. I'm imagining only fairly limited interaction. Perhaps even less interaction then Garrett and Viktoria in thief 2 ... but more meaningful when it occurs.

I think it could work if you had Garrett as the quest giver and layered the girl's objectives on top of that, maybe even some that could conflict/compete with the original ones. Then judge the outcome based on what objectives were completed and have it reflected in the next briefing or perhaps even mission. For example, rob a vault on a pure fact-finding mission and you might get increased patrols on the streets next mission.
That's very interesting, and vastly more ambitious then anything I was thinking about. My main concern with Garrett being in charge is that I can't imagine how he would talk to someone who wasn't his equal. He needs to be able to stand up to people and make sarcastic comments about their plans, and therefore they need to be independent actors who are capable of standing up to him and making their own plans.

A few things:
1) They didn't say taking the hook was the biggest challenge. They said that the position he finds himself in after taking the hook is his biggest challenge. Maybe something about having to deal with feelings he's never had before, or maybe something else, we don't really know yet.
2) Feminine is for emo wimpy boys now? I'd get my head knocked off if I tried telling that to any women I know!
"Feminine" is a broad term, it can mean many different concrete things. We only know one thing about how Gallagher means it: "
The strength and elegance of the feminine, as opposed to the chest out, legs apart, 'I will save the world' [attitude]". I'd say that's pretty much spot on.

Now I know this is a alternative dimension universe Thief but I can't help to wonder if this is also a prequel too. This loss being the cause of his later attitude towards things, the exclusion of factions making it easier to introduce new players to the City, His 'Amnesia' event is basically time he spent with the keepers.

Hi Vancore...It's already been officially stated that NuThief is not a prequel or sequel to the original games...It's an alternate NuThief Universe that has cherry-picked elements from the THIEF Universe...with some of those elements being twisted distortions that insult the legacy of THIEF and its community.

Personally I always thought Thief worked best as a thievery simulator with the barest outline of a story to give context. I think a Thief game should put most of its efforts into worldbuilding. I'd rather have 10 guard lines telling me what he does after work than 10 cutscenes of drama with characters I don't know or care about.

I gotta admit, though, the current characterization of Garrett is pretty interesting! Even if I'm a little concerned that there will be too much light shed on Garrett's character and background, thus removing much of the mystery and chance for interpretation - a huge part of what made old Garrett so intriguing.
A nice departure from the triple-A protagonist trends, if nothing else.

I have a slight memory of Erin using the claw as a weapon, but maybe the whole context suggested it to me when we heard this story at the GamesCom. Sounds like lots of drama, but on the other hand people have pointed out that Thief's storylines were never really extraordinary (by the way, Steven Gallagher said he was a TMA guy because initially he had played it first). Second, many fan works (FMs, fan fictions etc.) are even more cheesy and still there is this hubris within the community of knowing better what Thief really is. :erg: My impression from Cologne was that it can go in both directions, this story can work if executed properly, but it can also be too dramatic and foreseeable.
