I'm not necessarily even ripping on the story, but this new character they're calling Garrett really isn't much like the original one at all. Different voice, different look, different attitude, completely different background - why even call him Garrett? I'm not sure why they didn't just create a new Thief, I would have been fine with that. I think EM believes just calling him Garrett is going to automatically bring people on board with the new game, when in fact the opposite is true. Fans of the real Garrett are left to wonder - what happened to to the guy we've been following around for the past decade or so?
I agree. NuGarrett is a different person.
But on the bright side, for the low, low, price of only $380 you too can be NuGarrett!(bow and cape sold separately.)

I'm surprised no-one's bitching about Gallagher's response to the narrative vs. gameplay question. "A little bit of story and then you can get back to the gameplay"? Combined with the lack of readables in the E3 demo, I thought that would have thrown up a few red flags (it's the bit that stood out to me, anyway).
I was asking him basically the same thing, what approach he had to combine the two issues of telling a story that is more or less fixed and having the player experience the/his story which might be different in content but also obviously in the way that he receives it. I believe his answer was to do that with the help of the smaller choices in the game and the usual "standard" stuff of approaching things with different means, but there was no larger method IIRC of e.g. working through readables or other means. My English might have been defective, too, so it probably wasn't his fault, but I
did miss a concise answer to that.
On the bright side, I noticed more and more the style of the cutscenes to consist of floating painted layers. That is some art direction I can be happy with.

Garrett has been turned into a real ninja-wussy-pretty-boy. Drag his character in the mud a few times, at the very least...

Beleg, you saw cutscenes at Gamescom? I will have to read through this thread again as I missed that before...

I'm referring to the latest trailer material. Aside from the 3D rendering scenes there are some 2D-like ones with floating painted layers. I can imagine this to be used later in the game, at least for some occasions where it doesn't tie into the very action, like in TDS.

Given the amount of attention they've payed to live action lip-synching motion capture, it would be awfully strange for them to use 2D material.

You know what is even more strange? The lack of actual gameplay footage being shown. I would have expected a bit more by now.

I was thinking about this background story and wondered how Garrett can even be sure that Erin died while he didn't. I'm not sure if I should look forward to her being alive after all.
And in response to the problem of fixed story and experiencing the story as a player on your own: Maybe it's, to a certain point, really up to you, how much of Garretts past year you rediscover? It's probalby tied somewhat to the Baron plot, but maybe you don't have to see everything, or can even see different sides of what's going on. But they'd probably need readables or conversations to make that possible.

The strangest thing at all, to me, is that we've never gotten an answer to the swimmable water question. If the game is being released in six months, you think they'd know by now whether swimmable water is included or not, especially since the level they presented for playtesting actually had water in it.
Seems like one of these has to be true:
1. They know swimmable water is not supported, but don't want to admit it.
2. They know swimmable water is supported, but are saving that revelation for a rainy day. (Is it that big a deal?)
3. They don't know if swimmable water is supported. Maybe it's partially working but buggy so they don't want to say one way or the other. Six months from release this seems like a stretch. Wouldn't the levels need to be complete by now?

Really? Swimmable water?
This is one sticking point I don't get. There are much more important things, like noise mechanics, the specifics of Hard Core mode, the contextual movement, in my mind.
I doubt there is swimmable water. It's be a shame (see Dishonored) but it's not that big of a deal.
If you really want to know go ask in the gameplay mechanics thread at EM.
