I heard there are nine (or so) different races, and even factions among those races. I was wondering, do you have the freedom to become friends with any of the factions? Or with a whole race? Even the Undead?
IMO the perfect game is one where you have many areas to explore and lots of neutral NPC's, but there might be monsters and bandits all over the place.
I get the impression that there are sections in Arx Fatalis where almost everyone is hostile. Is that true?
My favourite RPG (and also the only one I really got into) is Exile (3) and large areas of the world were considered non-hostile territory. You would meet bandits and the likes, but in the end there'd always be a friendly town nearby.
Which leads me to the next question.. Is the game story-driven, meaning you usually go from section to section in the same order? Or can you take on more than one big quest and go pretty much wherever you like. Again that's not the impression I got from the demo, since the only way to the other human areas was through the goblin area...
Also, there doesn't seem to be a very active Arx Fatalis community around. Are there so few fans?

Yes, sadly, there are so few fans.

That's true that there seems to be less people waiting for Arx than for Morrowind...
But Morrowing is the 3rd episode of a very famous saga, while Arx starts from nothing.
But people are beginning to hear about Arx... And not only here and on some RPG related sites.
I've seen people talking about the demo of Arx Fatalis (with GOOD critics) on generalist forums.
And, if Arx rules as it should rule, I'm sure the word of mouth will do the rest (but a good promotion campaign shouldn't be neglected).

If we all throw in our split personas, it could be enough to spread the word. Of course, we need to stop to babble and mumur to oursevles ;)
Cheers,
