The live action trailers were good, raised hopes and pointed towards something much more interesting than what the latest in-game trailer painfully tried to showcase. Sighs were subsequently heard all across the place. That's pretty much it. What next?

Protip to Frictional: In a game without a modeled player body, do not start by having the player wake up on a table and look down at where his legs should be.
Also, when your voice actor sucks, don't have him comment on every single damn thing that happens. Actually, just don't do that at all.

Love Frictional, loved Penumbra (except requiem), loved Dark Descent.
I'm 100% with ZB on this one.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

That's not a thread, that's a YouTube video. WTF.

Dethy, I'm pretty sure you mentioned elsewhere that you don't like Lovecraft much. If I'm wrong about that, apologies, I was simply wondering if that might be linked to you not liking the Frictional games as much as other people clearly do.

It's not that I don't like Lovecraft. I've never said that. What I've said is that he was never that good a writer (relied too much on aping Poe, getting more and more baroque as time went on) and he was a consummate xenophobe (actually the more I think about it the more I think he had a host of phobias that influenced his racism and general reclusiveness.) But I like some of his stories and ideas anyway. It's just that Lovecraft's body of work, and works similar to it, do not translate well to a video game.

If that were the case, I don't think Frictional would be doing as well as they have.
At any rate, it's nice to see someone try something a little outside of the general mould, even if they're now stuck in their own.

Damn… well I really hoped that Frictional will actually take SOMA in somewhat different direction than they did with Penumbra/Amnesia games, especially since they openly stated that they let TheChineseRoom do AmfP since they were no longer interested in that franchise.
Now it looks like they gave up on Amnesia to do Amnesia in space. Or System Shock without guns? Still it could be a good game if it is an actual survival horror with emphasis on stealth (ie if it is not like AmfP), but I will be disappointed if what we get is just more of the same.

I think the only real problem with Lovecraft-based video games is simply the shitty execution – for example CoC: DCotE could have been a mega hit if the devs didn’t fuck up so many things so hard (including a game breaking bug in about last 2 minutes of the game). That is hardly fault of the Shadow over Innsmouth though. Prisoner of Ice had a good story, but it was just a by-the-numbers point and click adventure without interesting gameplay etc. Frictional Games got that right albeit without mentioning Lovecraft explicitly.
