I enjoyed that first trailer. Maybe because I thought it was actual in-game footage. (Stupid me. The woman looked to good to be CGI, but the floor definitely looked like it came from a computer game).
The 2nd trailer immediately made me realize that those trailers were not in-game. That dropped my interest a bit. But the idea behind the 2nd trailer certainly was interesting (copied personalities).
Now the in-game footage. Bah. That's not a game. That's another movie. Where is the gameplay ? Where do you control your character ? Where do you make decisions ? More and more games are just movies, where you get to push the "continue"-button at the right moment. I don't like that.

Same here. The first two trailers really looked interesting. The gameplay teaser ruins it for me.
While watching it, did anybody else think of this:

Looks interesting enough. I'm not crazy about the "saying everything that's happening" mechanic though. Reminds of those annoying "I have to make sure I'm not seen" hints in the Far Cry 3 stealth parts. "Hey Vaas - we found this guy in a bush talking to himself".

I thought the teaser was more about just giving the general idea of themes surrounding the game rather than offering a throughout gameplay presentation. It's hard to cover all fronts in such a short timespan. I don't want to make excuses for it (I haven't played the game afterall) but I feel like all those things like linearity, lack of gameplay, character comments were all part of the intended presentation - keep in mind it's a custom level and not part of the actual game, it's just meant to showcase.
Generally I'd guess if somebody didn't like Penumbra and/or Amnesia, SOMA will not change the their minds.

It was actually a slice of playable content.

Making The Trailer
While the footage above is unedited gameplay footage (I played through and recorded it myself), it is not from an actual game level. Just like with our Amnesia teaser video, it is a custom made map that is meant to show off the general feel and tone of the game over a four minute long trailer. This means that it is not*an exact representation of how the game is actually played. It gives a pretty good idea of how the gameplay works though.

Where is the gameplay ?
Have you not played a Frictional game before? Penumbra/Amnesia have more interactivity than basically any game I can think of, in terms of manipulating the environment.
(And yeah, I realize that trailer doesn't show off much in the way of gameplay).
Did you think the live-action trailers showed off gameplay or something? I mean, would a game where you sat around watching people talk to broken robots have better gameplay somehow?

I've played A:TDD half a year ago. And A:AMFP recently. I liked TDD very much. I didn't like AMFP at all. But that has nothing to do with my comment about gameplay here.
I rewatched the video. With my desktop gamma changed from 0.75 to 2.75. Now I saw more. Maybe I was a little too harsh about the lack of stuff the player does. He does do some things. And he does walk around. Maybe it was the end of the video that I didn't like. The player stands there, next to the brain, and watches the tentacles do something. While the camera probably froze. I don't like that, it happens too often in games these days. Especially when there nothing to do in a game, but keep walking forward over 1 fixed path. And then once in a while click a button. Open a door, break open a wall, whatever. If it's the only option during the last 2 minutes of walking around, then it is obvious you have to click the thing. Too much "gameplay on rails". This was one of the reasons why I didn't like AMFP.
Maybe I my conclusion was too early, but this video does look like there is one and only one path the player needs to follow. With occasional "click me, or you can't get through"-moments. Maybe A:TDD was like that too, but it certainly didn't leave that impression on me.

Considering that A) it was a teaser video featuring material that won't be in the game and probably should not be taken as completely representative of the final product (it was barely like, what, a few minutes long? hardly enough time to show AMAZING NON-LINEAR gameplay) and 2) Frictional are about as creatively stagnant with their gameplay as well as with plot, writing and themes, it's probably exactly like Penumbra and Amnesia: Terrible Subtitle.

AMFP is terrible. It also wasn't developed by Frictional.

The trailers piqued my interest because it hinted that this new Frictional game might not be another dark dungeon crawler with a generic occult horror story. Amnesia didn't do it for me. I'm not saying it was a bad game, but I was hoping Frictional was taking a different approach with this game.
I don't expect deep gameplay, as that doesn't seem to be the point of their games. However, the bit of game footage they decided to show was surprisingly lame. It looked like the level was trying to build some tension & mystery rather than show off any gameplay, but they sort of fucked that up with the voice over. And the ending had my eyes rolling in loops.
I hope it gets better.
