I loved SOMA, and am probably due for a replay, but I can think of better true horror titles. Dark Corners of the Earth, Condemned, Silent Hills, System Shock 2, RE4, even The Last of Us, all better as horror games. Just my opinion, mind you. It's actually hard to categorize SOMA, it's part horror, part psychological, part sci fi, part existential, and so on. I could keep going. Not taking anything away from it, it just didn't scare me that much overall.

Interesting. I loved RE4 and TLOU, perhaps even more than SOMA, but if asked I wouldn't classify either as horror games, rather I'd say they're action games with zombies in them. Dark Corners and SS2 I did find more scary than SOMA, but that horror came mostly from my own phobias, so they were not an enjoyable kind of horror. Condemned was ok, but nothing special. Silent Hill 2 was a great tho, and would definitely make my top 5 horror games list.

SOMA did not scare me. But then again, I judge horror not by how 'scary' it is but by how unsettling and disturbing it is. The atmosphere will always be there whereas the 'scare factor' wears off quickly. Some of the stuff in SOMA sticks with you (or maybe just with me) and the thematics remain to be questioned and pondered. That's what I think is important about it.
But damn it, I'll never understand why people cite Dark Corners as a scary game. Anything that was at least remotely good about it was destroyed by how unbelievably frustrating the whole thing was. That's one of the few games I legitimately regret buying and I'm always surprised that people actually like it.

SOMA is an actual horror game in that it horrifies more than it terrifies (comparison, AVP classic, which terrified me almost to the point of paralysis, but didn't have anything intrinsically horrifying about it). So far. The big shambly things are a fairly rudimentary challenge, but they do add something to the atmosphere.

Ok, you guys, as well as voters on metacritic, convinced me and I got it, even though initially I intended to wait until it would become cheaper. Being a fan of surhor (of all sorts) I couldn't resist.

All of this sounds very nice, but does it have multiplayer / achievements?

Now at Zeppelin (Delta). Curie was creepy.
I loved Penumbra, didn't like Amnesia, and I like this game very much so far. It reminds me of the Echo Night series: game mechanics, tempo, atmosphere all are pretty close.

Just finished it, after about a week of playing. I guess it took 20 hrs or so, I played very thorough.
My conclusion is: 10/10. A fantastic Game.
I'm sure it's a mustplay for everybody here, as it's a masterpiece of atmosphere, immersion, and storytelling. I don't remember the last time I was so immersed in a game, perhaps it was Heavy Rain.
You for sure will keep thinking about it even after the end.
The only thing, I'd prefer if there wasn't the final scene and the game was a little less buggy.
