Fresh newbie.. - by Bluegrime

Hello there everyone! I've just gotten Deus Ex, and I'm loving it.. However, I kinda need some help here. Not with individual missions, but skilll\aug use.
I'm trying to play through as a 'hacker' in the game, and it's all going well. But I feel like I need to ask this. Is there a better pistol then the stealth one? It works wonders if you are sneaking around, but it is a pain to use in a firefight. Same goes for the crossbow. I haven't touched the rifle skill, but the shotguns seem quite effective without any points in it. Should I buy a few ranks in rifle, or just keep using it at ranges where lack of skill dosen't matter?
What should be a priority? Weapon skills, or non-weapon skills. I have kept pistol at level 2 since Liberty Island, and it seems to be working just fine. However, I used the points I might've used in pistol to upgrade Multitool and Hacking to level 3 each, along with low-tech 2. Is this a good course of action? I figure there might be another huge shootout like the one I dealt with inside the Ton' with Paul that a stealth pistol and Dragon Tooth won't get me through.
I just got the sword ROM from VersaLife and Tong sent me back to check out level 2, so I might get the answer to this there, but i'm really wondering what the hell was with the 'Gray' inside the radiation room, and the carcass on the table!?!

IIRC there are only two types of pistol, the standard and the stealth, so that's about it. And the crossbow is ace. Use it to soften up groups of enemies before the firefight (i.e. tranq, or just try for a headshot with a standard dart).
The shotgun is very good (assault shotgun = teh win); if you're planning to use other rifles (especially the sniper rifle) then I'd recommend training up the skill.
I wouldn't necessarily bother upgrading low-tech, but you might find it useful. As for the weapon or non-weapon question, it really depends on the type of game you're playing. As you say you want a 'hacker'-type experience, by all means go for the non-weapon ones, but I found that lockpicking, electronics and computers weren't really worth upgrading past level 3.
And yes, you might well get into more huge shootouts.
As for the gray, IIRC there should have been some documentation nearby explaining that, or if not, you'll probably find some more near the end of the game.

I thought it was really cool that the advanced alien race end up acting like a bunch of monkeys. I probably would too if I was in their situation, although with feces instead of radiation.

Ahh, thanks Matthew! I was wondering if Hack 4 would let me do anything new.. But nope. And I didn't find any data cubes explaining the alien.. But the crazy hobo was still interesting I haven't gotten lockpick 2, since I usually don't bother to open a door that needs 5 or something. The closet in Jaime's office tought me that a tough lock dosen't give you a better prize.
I have survived 2 big fire fights, the last of which let me sit on a staircase and pick off guards with headshots. I might not want to get rifle 2, since I have a scope on my stealth pistol. However, and I am using the combat shotgun for killing the MIB's and mobs of MJ12 troopers.
I feel stupid for asking, but does anything develop with the 'thief' sub-plot? I kinda ignored it, but when I left UNATCO someone did a confessional to me. I went back to try and solve the quest, but no one will talk to me about it.

"solve the quest"??
The only "quests" are the ones that appear in your data vault. The only thing you can do about the office thief is take advantage of the situation.

No skill point bonus for somehow finding proof on who did it, then reporting it to Carter?
Matthew on 27/9/2005 at 09:20
Hmm ... don't think so. I think it's just a pointer as to whom you can approach in order to obtain more weaponry as you are leaving.
And heck, it's not like Carter cares what's left in stock :)

How is the confession of an office thief a clue to go talk to Carter? :weird:
Besides, the player should have already talked to everyone on the lower floor before heading up to the admin level.

I think Matthew meant it's a pointer to *that* guy himself (i.e., the thief) if you want more supplies before you go, not to Carter -- which is so obvious it's almost not worth saying, but I think his point was the whole theft thing is just for that purpose alone and not any sub-plot.

What he said.
