Well.
Well, well, well.
Didn't mean to start a fight. ;)
(Well, okay, I'm not broken up about it. Conflict is good for the soul.)
Very cool game.
I'll post a full report soon, but I have three things to say right now:
1) Gunther went down faster than my prom date. Kinda disappointing. I didn't even get to use the kill-phrase Jaime told me. As soon as I saw his German ass lumbering at me from the shadows of the cathedral basement, my vision went all red and I emptied a full clip of 7.62 into his chest while the crosshairs were still green. He didn't get up after that. (But I had a nearby QuickSave, so I went back to see what happens if I have a conversation with him. He jumped me anyway, and he still crumpled like a little baby.)
2) Walton Simons in the Ocean Base tunnel. Shot that crackhead to pieces with HE rounds. Nothing like making your point with serious firepower.
3) Did the Helios thing. The way I saw it was this: The New Dark Age didn't much appeal to me. Seemed to be a retrogression, and that's kinda antithetical to the story. The Illuminati choice was tempting, but Everett just rubbed me wrong the whole way. And he has that poor bugger all frozen in the basement. Something about Tong and Everett I just didn't care for much.
But Daedalus, Icarus, and the eventual Helios never screwed me over. Daedalus was an ally from the first, Icarus freaked me out a bit with it's emails and general tone, but never did me wrong, and Helios set those wee security bots to cover me against MJ12 nasties. Mighty nice of it.
And, of course, GBM Denton had only one thought when the three options were to be considered: "Shit, if someone's gonna rule the world, it's gonna be me. And not as Everett's lapdog, either."
Lawnmowerman, me.
;)
Okay, so I'll see about making a gripping and amusing tale of my adventures through DX.
I'm going to play it again on a harder setting.

Play it on Realistic! It's the only way to go. ;)

HELL YEAH! Glad to see you feel the same way I do towards those two tin cans, Simons and Gunther. I'd never felt better when I emptied a clip of 7.62's in his skull and sent his ass to the junkyard, and as for Simons, he got real attached to the GEP rocket I sent his way and I haven't heard from him since. Nice choice goin with Helios as well. Play it again and again GBM. Cause DX just gets better each time through. :)

I'm playin for the ???th time and I always play on Realistic, dang that is some hard stuff. Simons is easy because by the time you get to him you'll have quite a few 20mmHE rounds for the ol' assault rifle, But Gunther I just use the kill phrase on and Anna I kill at the beginning with Two LAMs, (I tried one but it didn't kill here two spaced kinda far apart takes care of her though). I still hate those stupid Spider Bots though.

Minor disappointment.
I was trying to play as "GBM Denton, Government Stooge" just to see how much roleplaying this game could take. I was thinking maybe there was a way to play it that way.
So I executed Lebedev. I was friendly and polite to Gunther and Anna. I played by the book, I did as I was told.
And then Paul sent me to that NSF Building to send the distress call. I promised I'd check it out, but that I couldn't guarantee that I'd send the signal.
So I got there, checked it out. Said hi to all the troops. Decided that the "evidence" Paul had on Simons et al. was totally circumstantial and none of my business to question, anyway. So I went back to the 'Ton to tell him so.
"Sorry, Paul," I said. "I checked it out, but I'm not a terrorist. I won't be sending the signal."
He muttered something about wishing there was some way to convince me, but I had already left.
But there was nowhere to go. I didn't know the code to get into the subway, and Jock was nowhere to be seen.
So I cheated.
;)
I found the subway code scribbled on a piece of paper from the first time I played (yeah, I do that; I can't be bothered to check the Goals / Notes HUD all the time), and let myself in. Took the subway back to Battery Park, figured that either Jock would be there or someone from UNATCO anyway.
I was kinda hoping I could turn on Paul and have G & A as backup against him and his NSF buddies.
Ah, but that was not to be.
Navarre jumped me in the Battery Park Station, but since I hadn't done anything wrong at the NSF building, she just stood there. I couldn't even interact with her.
Same story with Gunther up topside.
I could hear the chopper nearby, so I activated the Speed aug and jumped the barricades to get to it. Jock sits there and tells me he ain't going nowhere until he knows that Paul's okay.
I tried a bunch of ways to be Government Stooge, but alas! it was not to be...
Had to go back, slaughter a bunch of UNATCO goons, send the signal, fight my way back to the 'Ton, kill some MiBs and some more goons, and hightail it back to G & A at Battery Park.
Anna stood in exactly the wrong spot when I ducked into a vent shaft, so I chucked a LAM at her. She didn't get up after that.
And I already knew the story with Gunther up top, so I tossed a few LAMs and as many HE rounds as I had up the stairs to knock out a bot or two so I could pull the old Speed aug jump and get to the chopper.
Didn't work. Got shredded. Too many bots.
I'm going to try that again, but get it right this time. I wonder if I can get to Jock? Probably not, that would mean I'd miss the whole MJ12 bit, and that would circumvent the whole Paul / Daedalus / MJ12=UNATCO thingie...
grumble, grumble...
Oh, well.
Still doesn't suck.
I love this game.
:D

yeah that was a dissapointment. You HAD to defect to the NSF. Oh well. I guess that no game is perfect. But some get REALLY close (DX and HL) ;)
wsthune on 20/7/2001 at 06:02
Spider bots: Sabot rounds. Takes care of the problem quite nicely. Alternative: EMP grenades (not always effective) or spy drone.
As for not believing Paul: Yep, you can't go anywhere unless you do as he asks. Just keep telling yourself, "He's my brother. Sure, he's an arrogant SOB who was willing to let me die for his cause, but gosh darn it, I'll overlook that because he's my brother."
Gingerbread Man on 20/7/2001 at 13:12
Sabot rounds for the wee spiderbots? That's a bit too subtle for me. ;)
I'm a 20mm / LAM kinda guy. I really resent it when I have none of either and have to resort to those wimpy EMP grenades...
I'd rather run like hell than disable bots.
(Oh, incidentally, the first time through DX I got shot up really badly at the start of the Shipyards. Did most of the level without legs, if you can believe that. Serious creepy-crawly action until I got some Medikits in me in the areas just outside the freighter itself. That was nerve-wracking, I'll tell ye.)
