Nah, I was just running it on an "old" computer (and off a CD on my desktop, I think) for experimentation. It's nice, but I don't think it's worth the hassle unless you seriously need the performance boost compared to DOSbox.

Who doesn't? DOSbox hasn't emulated any post-386 game for me at proper speeds. :erg:

That's odd really, I could play even somewhat more performance hungry games just fine (Jagged Alliance, including the videos, and I Have No Mouth etc etc etc). I tried Shattered Steel too, which ran fine up to the point where I actually tried starting a mission. Which is when it crashes to the command prompt :(

Agreed with Uncia here. Speaking as an oldies fan, there's a kind of troublesome generation of games from around 1994-5ish - dos based, but too demanding for Dosbox. At least on my creaky old Athlon 1500. So I'm definitely interested in faster alternatives.

Your arms must hurt after all of that digging.
I hope that ReactOS appears in a usable state sooner rather than later.

Unlike my five-years-ago self I'm not seeing a great deal of use for this.

DOSBox can run demanding games, you just need the CPU power to get there. Mine runs stuff like Shadow Warrior perfectly. I also installed Windows 95 in it just for lols.
I ran FreeDOS on an old laptop (~500 mhz) and I played Doom on it for a bit. The game ran just fine. The most usage I've ever gotten from FreeDOS was in combination with DOSEmu. This alows one to run DOS games on a Unix system while using the native CPU instead of simulating one. This is helpful for old crappy machines which are too fast for Windows 98 but aren't fast enough to run DOSBox to the fullest (like a netbook).

Odd. I've played a few dozen games in it that were alot more power hungry (ie Crusader No Remorse, Command and Conquer 1 etc) and those ran fine for me in dosbox. Only game I've ran into so far that I've had any issues with was Eye of The Beholder 3.

Shadowcat necro'd a 5-year old thread, on hardware back then Dosbox sometimes struggled to throw stuff around at a decent speed.
(whatever happened to Uncia anyway?)
