Ah, the freebies thread!
Hrm. Were (
http://neurohack.com/transcendence/index.html) Transcendence and (
http://neurohack.com/anacreon/index.html) Anacreon mentioned? I've never actually played Anacreon myself, but Transcendence was good fun.
Transcendence plays like a sci-fi roguelike, with stargates serving the purpose of dungeon stairs, and lots of weapon shops, fuel depots, and armor/shield generator vendors to visit, as well as countless hordes of enemies. You upgrade your ship, loot the wrecked ships of your enemies, that sort of thing.
(
http://ravencoast.com/gsindex.html) Grave Spirit is a strange mix of adventure game and... hitting things with a stick game. I still haven't solved it myself.
Have the roguelikes been put in, too? (
http://www.nethack.org/) Nethack, (
http://www.dungeoncrawl.org/) Dungeon Crawl, the (
http://doom.chaosforge.org/) Doom roguelike, and (
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/) Dwarf Fortress. There are others, too, but these are my favorites.
(
http://withinadeepforest.ni2.se/) Within A Deep Forest can be downloaded here. You play a bouncing ball, it's quite a challenging platformer.

Will abandonware become legal? :o
(
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/12/01/internet_archive_copyright_reprieve/) Spot the DMCA exemption for "computer programs and video games distributed in formats that have become obsolete and that require the original media or hardware as a condition of access, when circumvention is accomplished for the purpose of preservation or archival reproduction of published digital works by a library or archive".
EDIT: Yeah, OK, it's a renewed exemption that originated in 2003, but still, it perhaps bodes well for the British Library, who are lobbying for similar exemptions in the UK for audio etc.

It looks like (
http://knytt.ni2.se/) Knytt was recently completed. In it, you play a weird little rat/monkey/kid that was abducted by an alien, only the alien's ship runs into too many asteroids and crashlands on another planet. It is up to Knytt to run, jump, and climb to recover the lost spaceship components so that it and the alien may escape the planet.
The controls are simple, just be sure to play the tutorial. The map is large, you can climb almost anywhere, and there are secret passages through walls that look solid.

Thanks for that, I'm loving Knytt. Took a break so I don't end up playing through the whole thing at once ;)

Took me about an hour to complete it. Didn't search for all that many secrets though as the ones I found seemed slightly pointless.
TheOutrider on 10/12/2006 at 16:55
That's because they are. As far as I can tell (and see from giving the forums a quick browse), all of the secrets are extra areas with more cute pixelly creatures to watch.

There are two secrets that are mildly useful, besides the places that give boosts to your jumping power. The two secrets are a song that can be played in the credits screen, and a minigame also accessible from the credits screen.
Also, you can cheat to get items, by editing the settings file. Under [secrets] add:
Extra=Hang Glider
or
Extra=Balloon
