Have you tried disabling multicore rendering?
I understand that it's one of the Source features of L4D that they've retroactively patched into some of the Orange Box titles. Disabling that option in L4D used to eliminate GPU driver-related stuttering.
Yes, that's disabled. Hate that option, it gave me nothing but trouble in L4D2.
I did try searching for the problem (which is how I came across the suggestion to disconnect the internet), but my Google-fui failed me at finding any better solution.

Hmmm, ever since I got my dual core last week, I have noticed Left 4 Dead games tend to stutter a bit. I'll try disabling the multi-core rendering. Thanks for the tip.

Looks like Nemesis - might give it a chance. (Are there any freeware R-Type-style shmups?)

Nemesis? The Gameboy version of Gradius? QUIT TRYING TO BE FANCY AND JUST SAY IT LOOKS LIKE GRADIUS!
In a way, it's more like Gradius mixed with Darius mixed with some Raiden with a dash some sumptin sumptin thrown in. Whatever it is, it's fun. :D

I'm wondering whether
Gradius was called
Nemesis in Germany or the UK, because I knew it under that name before the Gameboy even existed.

I dunno. The Gradius series and all its spinoffs seem to have a different name for all the different markets. I knew Gradius as Gradius, Nemesis was the GB port, and Lifeforce over here was known as Salamander everywhere else.
All those games back then got name swapped. Like Contra. It's either that, Gryzor, or Probotector. I seriously think they did it so people would think they're missing out on some awesome game only people overseas got, and end up buying two copies of the same thing.
