I've played SAIS for about three hours today and I think I've worn out the basic premise.
Man, I played the
demo of SAIS for weeks, with half the stars and I think rather less than half the content of the full version. Maybe the game doesn't appeal in the same way for everyone.
Oh, and to give you all something to aim at, the highest SAIS score I've ever heard of is 14,983 :)
But that's just freakish.
FWIW, my own best score is 12,126.

I've tried to get into Oolite a few times, but lacked the patience to seek out the mods and beta builds and whatnot. If you find something interesting, I hope you come back and let us know, as the 'official' package is dated 2006.
Yes, I am using the latest Windows build (1.73.4) which is meant to be a beta release, but it all seems stable to me. Some mods which I've found good & recommend:
Galatic Navy OXP - Certain planets are Galactic Navy bases where you can dock, buy military grade equipment (if they like you enough), and do missions for them.
Commies OXP - This adds prison camps and dockable factories and so on in Communist worlds.
Dictators OXP - Replaces police ships and station styles to dictatorship style in Dictatorship worlds.
Assassins Guild OXP - Galaxy 7 is now home to a clandestine organisation that can arrange for you to be hired to do hit-jobs. Adds new equipment, ships and stations.
Anarchies OXP - Adds rebel stations and hacker bases in Anarchy worlds. These can sell you equipment or arrange to clear your name (for a large fee).
(the Assassin's Guild one I haven't tried yet since I'm not rich enough to get to Galaxy 7 yet!). For ships, then I recommend:
Generation Ships - Adds the mythical generation ships from Elite
Aegidian's X-Ships - Adds some extra "classic" ships
Wolfwood's Variants - Ditto
Hope this helps! I've not experienced any crashes so far after a week or so.

My best so far is pretty low, around 8000. I should rephrase, though, it's not the premise that I've worn out, but the original content. Within a few days of play, I know the basic winning strategies and can tell within a minute or so how the rest of a game is going to play out. I think I'm also a little spoiled by the demo for Weird Worlds: it seemed significantly expanded, with different ships, captain roles, and so forth.
So far, I've tried out the Red Mars mod, and it's pretty good. For one thing, it seems to actually spell out the strengths of ship parts, whereas in SAIS it's more of a semantic guessing game based on the item description.
I think what I like best about SAIS is that it manages to distill a lot of the fun, exploration, time panic, and humor of Star Control II in a tight little package. Reminds me of Oasis (a partial distillation of Civ) that way.

Assorted helpful things.
Thanks for this, BTD. Between Infinite Space and Oolite, space is somehow big and interesting again (I can't afford the time or money for X3. Especially the money. Also the time).

Just discovered that the anarchies OXP file isn't compatable with the latest version of Oolite - apologies for not spotting this earlier :o

True, the demo for Weird Worlds was pretty much SAIS+ on its own.

I agree. Also because they're both computer versions of patience; you might have played it 500 times before, but you still want to find out how things pan out
this time. There's always the chance that the cards will be dealt just so, and you'll get that magic perfect game... but there's always scope for things to go horribly wrong as well :)

Yeah that's a fascinating game that goes to a black screen after the opening logo and then just sits there.

It'll only run if you're cool, Deth. Guess you ain't cool.

I got it going, guess the flash fucked up or something so I hit ctrl+f5 and it works. This game rules.
