Has anyone mentioned (
http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php) Iji yet?
It seems to have been released fairly recently, and so far, it's pretty awesome sauce.
Basically, it's a 2D action platformer/shooter title in which you can upgrade your stats after collecting certain pickups usually dropped by killed enemies. There's also a lot of logs lying around to read, ala System Shock. The game also appears to change the story somewhat depending on whether you're a pacifist or berserker.

The Suffering is apparently free to download now (
http://files.filefront.com/The+Suffering+Client/;11846564;/fileinfo.html) from Filefront.
For folks who never tried it out, it's a slightly above-average horror shooter with a slight Silent Hill-ish vibe.
Interesting story, too. You play a man named Torque on death row, sentenced for murdering his wife and kids. Which, of course, he doesn't remember doing. Long story short, once he arrives at the penitentiary, the whole places goes to hell. Literally. Something causes a whole load of monstrosities to crawl out of the woodwork, and the entire place is submerged in chaos while they go a-chop chop choppin' at everyone around -
Bemused Prisoner (to Slayer): "Hi, you look like you need a hand. And some feet. Also, your head's bolted on kind of weird, and those straps and that straitjacket don't go too well with--"
Slayer: "GRAAARRGGGHHHH" (chop)
As I said, slightly like Silent Hill. But with more violence. Lots more. We're talking so many (
http://www.thewallpapers.org/wallpapers/5/513/thumb/600_The_Suffering-003.jpg) litres of freshly dripping blood-spatter here it'll make
you want to have a bath. Which is more than I can say for (
http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2004/reviews/920504_20040618_screen002.jpg) the protagonist.

I know this was on the horizon, but it seems funny that this happened after I spent 5.99$ on it at GOG.com. I can now play it whenever I feel like it, offline and with mods. :thumb:

Ah that's pretty cool, I like how the level terrain 'deforms'.
