I was reading an article on writing in games at popmatters.com today and the writer mentioned (
http://hcsoftware.sourceforge.net/passage/) this indie game. Having read about it before I played it I'm afraid my experience was somewhat tainted. I'd like to hear what other people, who haven't read about it, think of it.

That was quite an interesting, and moving little experience. I also don't want to say much because I think it is vital that people play this with no preconception, but my one tip is that you can move in four directions, not two, which I apparently missed on my first playthrough.

Uh. Wow. I think I actually teared up a bit.

I played passage when it first came out, and it's never really done much for me. Too much of the symbolism seemed trite and obvious.
On the other hand, his follow up game, (
http://hcsoftware.sourceforge.net/gravitation/) Gravitation, I enjoyed very much, both because it was more of a game and had more ambiguous symbolism.

I played Passage a while back and loved it the first two times, but the problem it (and the only other art game I've played, The Marriage) has is that the gameplay mechanics are the art and once you've figured out what they are there isn't much room for ambiguity and very little motivation to replay the game. I don't mean that in the traditional 'video game replayability' sense, but in the sense that a good book or film can be experienced many times and always offer something new; with the art games I've seen I'm not sure that's the case.
Still a great direction for people out there to be headed though :thumb:

Don't forget (
http://www.byond.com) BYOND, it may be 2D and kinda low-end, but the games are free, it comes with its own SDK package, and games can be made either online or single-player (tho single player requires a bit of code work).
It's where I learned some of the basics of game design (a friend gave me some of his source when I told him I had an interest). They may not be the best out there, but they're free. :cheeky:

For everyone that loves the Heroes of Might and Magic gameplay:
(
http://www.heroeswm.com)
Heroes of War and Money. A very well done free game. You are a hero who can battle other heroes with your armies. You can choose up to 7 factions (knights, elfs, wizards, necromancers, demons, dark elfs, barbarians). You can fight in 1vs 1 duels or complex batles like 2vs2 or 3vs3 with "everyone against everyone" or "even team" mode.
By the way, I´m playing there with the name "Radamantos" (dark elf).

Plus tons of golden oldies like Street Fighter 2, Metal Slug 2, King of Fighters 96, Final Fight, Cannon Fodder, Rampage, etc. There are also indie-games being distributed through this thing. I'm playing one called (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Robot) Mr. Robot right now which is a platformer/RPG/Adventure thingy with a pretty engaging storyline.
And, yes, it's all totally free. Full versions. No spyware or shit that I know of. Legit. You do have to watch a small commercial at the start of each game though. Usualy for Honda. There's also a Gold Membership option($60/year, only available in America/Canada. Dammit.) which removes the ads and gives you tons more games. The Sam & Max episodes e.g. get released for free on GameTap Gold. And a few new games like Jericho and Turning Point are on there.

Yeah, gametap is somehwat similar to steam.. funny thing is, steam offers thief deadly shadows, but you have to pay. (actually, im surprised gametap would offer that game for free but i guess it makes sense considering ion storm went out of business like LGS did) Of course steam doesn't ahve any free full games except trackmania nations? anybody know?

Not really, since you don't own a license for any of the games with GameTap. If you subscribe, you can play their whole catalog from the get-go, but if you ever unsubscribe, you can't play anything but the free stuff. It was nice while I was using it, but I ran out of stuff to play after a while. I might sign back up for a month to play the new Sam & Max games, but I was hoping they were going to get Penumbra: Black Plague first.
