Exile 2 - The Nameless
I misread this at first and thought it said a successor to Elite, which made me excited for a second.
But it prompted me to do a little research and I found (
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/) Vega Strike, a very good open-source game in the Elite lineage (i.e., space trading), and even though it still says beta, it's perfectly playable, and already incredibly detailed and fun.
(It also reminds me of (
http://www.freeorion.org/index.php/Main_Page) FreeOrion, also still in development but not fully playable like Vega Strike, I gather, but I'll link to for reference).

(

It may not look like much at first...until you start playing it and the totally-fuck-you-in-the-face-with-a-rusty-wooden-spoon level design rears its ugly head.

I can now see why the game website is titled 'IWBTG! A Very Hard Game About a Boy and 8-bit Masochism!'

Oh, I just remembered about (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=in6RZzdGki8) this video...I'd want one about IWBTG in a similar style.
(Of course, that Super Mario Bros. hack probably has nothing on IWBTG in terms of difficulty...especially when you can skip most of the alternate World 1-1 by breaking a block jumping through the ceiling at a point halfway through the level.)
EDIT: (

Actually I think that it's primarily influenced by Wing Commander and Privateer.
In fact there's two completed Privateer remakes floating around that were built upon Vegastrike (can't link to them as I believe they've used loads of assets from the original game).

Yeah ... that's why I said "Elite lineage"; it was just the first in that line. I didn't meant to say it was the main influence. I was just connecting it to my previous sentence, and as just a shorthand for games in that style.

I just have to say that Allegiance is an excellent game. Give it a try, and don't be discouraged by the learning curve.

(
http://source.bungie.org/) The Marathon trilogy is LEGAL abandonware. Playable on practically every platform now thanks to an enhanced source port. There's lots of user-made HD content packs too, designed for said source port.
