The controls and general interface are a little rough, but the core battles are amazingly good IMO. Deceptively so, because it looks basic. I found it easy to gain an intuition for what works (no sitting there analysing stats), and it has that 'one more turn' feeling to it like X-COM and others. The absolute best is when you charge your cavalry into the side of their archers - who immediately flee - but the cavalry keep charging under momentum to the next target, smashing into the rear of one of their sub-generals which causes massive casualties and a cascading hit to morale over an entire flank of the enemy, causing mass panic, tipping the entire battle in your favour. It can be beautiful like that. You can tell I'm a fan.

Battlestar Galactica Deadlock is my favorite of the tactical space battle games, not that it's a very big genre.

Civ6 with all expansions is a solid entry in the series.
