I should have mentioned this earlier. Star Citizen is free to play through Sept. 23.
It's still a buggy mess and crashes a lot but ... it's actually getting there as a game. I know it's been a running joke for like a decade now that the "you can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel" myth has suckered in countless players to pay for the greatest vaporware in history, but you kind of can see it now. There's enough there now to live in its world a bit, and one has to admit it's a finely realized galaxy. It still looks jaw dropping, and it's an open multiplayer world, so it doubles as a pretty good social hangout you can do some gameplay stuff in already.
Well I don't know if I have any attention left over for it, but I think it would be cool to shoot some machinima in it at least.

Epic giveaways this week btw are Football Manager 2020, Stick it to the Man!, and Watchdogs 2.

Uhhh while the comparably ancient in this forum are chewing contemplative tobacco over Commodores and Amigas elsewhere, I have the relatively less obscure reminiscence of booting up Windows (3.11,
Windows for Workgroups, more advanced than 3.1 for the proles thinking of mistaking one for the other :D) and setting my SVGA resolution to 800x600x16 colours and being blown away by the sharpness of 8 point Arial and the fullness of a blankly wallpapered desktop and the unmitigable slowness of Castle of the Winds.
Anyway, in a burst of unasked for saudade, one of the more charming and unknown games from Microsoft's game packs back then, Chip's Challenge, is now (
https://store.steampowered.com/app/346850/Chips_Challenge_1/) free on Steam.
One screenshot was enough to remind me of Chip's gormless efforts (i.e., mine) to tackle each room's puzzles and get the girl, a goal always tantalisingly close yet always just out of reach. Times past, why are you so bittersweet.

A free remake of Chip's Challenge?
What evil person would do such a thing?!

Chip himself, of course. Enjoy! (For real, Chip/Chuck Sommerville put all of them out plus a 3D remake I wasn't aware of until now. I might get those if I find myself brave enough to go down the rabbit hole.)
