Hello,
I am long time lurker in this forum, and avid Thief fan since its beginnings. I am also a hobby musician, and recently released my second Dungeon Synth album. Now, I know, that this is a very niche genre, so I would like to give you a brief introduction of it, because I believe, there could be some people here, who might like it.
Dungeon Synth has its roots in the 90s in Black Metal, when artists began to incorporate ambient pieces in their music. It is a fantasy inspired genre, taking inspiration mostly from medieval aesthetics or high fantasy like Lord of the Rings. Dungeon Synth kind of sounds like soundtracks from old fantasy RPGs.
For more details and song samples, please visit the following link: (

Now, the album I have currently released takes inspiration from the Thief world, a theme I would like to keep for my future releases. For those of you, who are interested, you can listen to it here: (

Please keep in mind, that this is neither supposed to be a soundtrack for the game, nor have I used sounds from the game (I only used the melody from the Horn of Quintus for the last track).
I thought about using screenshots from the games, but as far as I know, that would violate copyright laws, as the game design would be intellectual property of the respective level designers. I also thought about creating something on my own with DromEd, but i would bet, that this would also violate some laws. :D
Does anybody know of free to use artwork, or is even an artist him-/herself, who wouldn't mind if I use their pictures?
Best regards

These are some very well made tracks, good work! As someone who also produces electronic music, I can tell you have a great ear for programming synths. The track you have focused on Bandcamp "The Astronomer's Dream" is also excellent. That warbling analogue synth (similar patch to the one at the beginning of Lorna's Lamentation?) is particularly good.
EDIT: regarding your actual question, I'm not sure, but I thought you may want some feedback on the music anyway

There are a number of artists here who are active and whom you could ask for permission to use their works. Just off the top of my head, there is Dominus, whaleoil1 and redface. However, while I'm no lawyer, I would think that a screenshot of a game would be considered fair use as long as it's attributed properly.

Thank you very much, it means a lot to me, when someone is able to find some beauty in my music. But to answer your question: no it is not the same synth in those two songs, but i did use the sound from the beginning of "Lorna's Lamentation" in other songs, just because i like it so much.
And yes, i am always glad about feedback. :)

Thank you for your kind response, I will get in contact with them.
Hmm... maybe I should give it another try and dig a little deeper into the legal matter. Maybe I can find an answer somewhere.

Ah! Its so great to see another fan of dungeon synth, and who created Thief inspired album. Christmas is really early this year. Thank you so much!
Using DromEd renders sounds fine - from artist point of view. You are using engine and textures as tools to create own vision, which will be probably covered by touches of photoshop. Although as mentioned, its point of view of creator, not someone who knows copyrights law well. More importantly you won't earn too much by making such cover art to album, so there's not too much danger in eyes of copyright owners as you are earning money they should get.
About art itself, you can always ask the artist for permission, but mention about possibility of heavy editing(playing with colors, saturation, adding/removing objects etc.). Some doesn't appreciate that.
btw. If you don't know what to do with extra cash - you can always commission artist to create cover art. Ask won't hurt and there are artist who doesn't have commission sheets, or info about having open commissions but you can have a chance to order from them something.

Thank you all for your kind comments. :)
@wycha: I knew, I couldn't be the only Thief fan, who is also a fan of Dungeon Synth :D
@mtk: It's nice, that my album reminds you of olr RPGs, as i was striving for an old school sound. If you search for the term "old school dungeon synth", you will actually find a whole lot (and probably better) albums that have this 90s vibe.

I am glad to anounce, that my next album is finally finished: (

Like its predecessor it is set in the universe of the Thief game series, but this time, the album was inspired solely by the "Life of the Party" OM.
A big thanks to Dominus, for letting me use one of his images as cover art. :)
