ok i'm using a philips acoustic edge and a geforce4 Ti 4200 don't know my cpu speed but
it's way above what morrowind needs.
My problem is is that i start playing and it runs smooth, not an inch of lag but as i keep playing it just gets worse and worse and worse to the point that i can't move a step without it stopping. It doesn't bog down like normal lag it just seams to stutter (like when you load a new area). But it turns into unplayable after maybe half an hour (or less) of gameplay. I really don't get it seeing as how it will run just fine for those first 30 mins or so and then i'm stopping and starting ever damn millasecond! Also once get out of the game it screws with my computer! Every time i load something (like a webpage) my sound will stutter and my mouse will lag untill i restart my comp. Any help would be great as i really love the game but can't stand only getting to play it for half an hour at a time.

It sounds like you have a horrible memory leak. This is reprimandable though.
What Operation system do you have?(If it's win98, winme, or anything other than win2k or winxp, get winxp =D)
Get latest dx, Detonator drivers...
Reinstall Morrowind.
Reinstall your current detonator drivers, if they are the most current.
Reinstall or update your sound card drivers.

I'm pretty sure there is a memory leak somewhere in morrowind. The same thing always happens to me. the town of vivec is too much for my computer it seems. After crossing three of the complexes, it slows down a whole bunch.
maybe 1.1 will fix this... Every 1.0 bethesda game had this problem... well, in DF, it was 11, 1.2, 1.3, and pretty much everything after that...

Zippin:
You have the same soundcard as me, and so I must ask: have you had any other issues with sound? For instance, whenever I'm in some manner of Dwemer ruins, where there are a lot of sounds playing at once, on top of one another, the music and sound distort and crackle. I'm running Win2k, and I've had sound issues in the past, and I'm wondering if, perchance, you managed to fix this problem somehow.
Just curious if you've had similar problems.
WRT your problem: Tuco's advice is good, although I might disagree with the bit about WinXP. IMHO, Win98SE is a safer bet than WinXP, though I'm sure there are plenty that would disagree with me in turn.
In any case, like he said, try reinstalling your drivers, either to use the latest Detonator XP drivers, OR the WHQL version (try it with both; they should both be available on NVidia's site, or if you've got a Visiontek card, try visiontek's site). Reinstall DirectX and Morrowind. You should also (just because it's generally a good idea) make sure you close as much running in the background as you can.
As far as sound drivers are concerned, I had to fight with mine to get them to work, and I still experience periodic crashes related to my sound drivers (in addition to the problem I mentioned above). Try either the latest version (available on a site I had to dig around for; I'll include it below), or the version on whatever driver CD that came with your card.

If worst comes to worst, you could also try reinstalling your OS, although that's kind of a desperate and risky measure. :) It's also always a good idea to defrag or scandisk on a regular basis, although I don't think that this would directly contribute to your problem.
As a final note, I will reluctantly suggest that you might want to look into searching for a safedisc crack. Although I have not heard of SafeDisc contributing to a memory leak, and though I would not ordinarily recommend this sort of thing, it _is_ a resource hog. I experienced an increase of about 5 fps, but increased instability, so I don't use it, but it may help you isolate the problem, even if it turns out that it's not the source of the problem.
I hesitate to provide you with a link because the crack is (at best) in questionable legal bounds; the particular version I used doesn't remove the CD check, but it does muck with the core Morrowind executable. Use your best judgement, I suppose.
Oh, and I'm not sure that zily's statement that Morrowind contains a memory leak is entirely accurate, as neither myself nor my brother have experienced (at least in any noticeable way) a memory leak. Of course, that doesn't mean that on a number of systems there isn't a memory leakage problem; it just means that perhaps the leak isn't intrinsic to Morrowind, so much as particular system configurations in combination with Morrowind. :)

haven't really gotten that far (unless your talking dwarven caves) like the one behind fort moonmoth, but i still haven't had that problem. Anyways i'm running on win98se and you're on crack if you think i'm gonna get on xp ::joke: but anyways I AM have some trouble with a comfliction between my old soundblaster and my new philips. (the comp has some driver stuff left over from the SB and it wants to use that) and i have been having some troubles with that. So i think that might be the root of my problem, if any of you have had this problem please by all means LET ME KNOW!

well, when I upgraded to winxp, I noticed a bunch better things. Warcraft 3 ran a lot better (probably shouldn't ahve said that outloud) and of course, NFTS beats FAT32 with a stick... WinXP is good. Not the crappy upgrade, but complete reformat + install.
Bleda on 5/6/2002 at 05:09
And if you want to beat WinXP down get Win 2K and laugh at the buggy memory usage of Win XP
Tuco on 5/6/2002 at 05:59
win2k and winxp both have very good memory usage... I haven't noticed any significant memory leaks in either, as well...
