lol, Al Gore has cancelled his trip to Copenhagen, what an inconvenient truth. Because of 'great annoyance', yes.....Al

You're implying...what? What exactly is Gore's evil ulterior motive for not attending the conference?
CCCToad on 4/12/2009 at 13:57
no money in it?
There's people who make convincing arguments about climate change, and actually seem to believe what they preach. Al Gore isn't one of them, with a "carbon footprint" the size of a small town.
However, I do admit that my opinion ins biased by the fact that I find Al Gore extremely obnoxious.

I've given up looking for logic or even parseable syntax in Fragony's posts (see above).

Global cooling was a theory from the late 1970's when Glaciation and soot particles in the air were being studied. One scientist wrote a book called the Cooling, which was picked up by a number of newspapers and Newsweek magazine. (The book was called the coolng by the way) It was one theory amongst many, blown out of all proportion by a publishing companies PR machine. The actual book isnt bad, and has a fair discussionof the science. It says, if things carry on as they are were heading for climate disaster, and from the evidence I see the most likely factors in the end are particulate cooling to cause massive cooldown. but more research needs doing.
The similiarities, they burn.
Ice burn

My main problem with Al Gore is that throughout the late 80's I listened religiously to Jello Biafra's spoken word albums.
And if you've heard 'em you'll know his opinion of Tipper.
Then in the nineties I realised this christian right wing devil bitches husband was the

Its True! Both Parties ARE different wings of the Same Organization! Like the WTO and the Order in DX2!

Plus you've got the whole "excess CO2 in the atmosphere traps heat causing temperature rise, but STUPID excess CO2 in the atmosphere stops heat even getting in in the first place, causing ice age".
So first one, then t'other.
The more CO2, the more warming...there isn't any way that more CO2 will result in cooling.
Light is emitted by the sun. It is mostly visible light. This goes straight through the CO2 in the atmosphere. (since its transparent!). This light hits the surface of the earth and is absorbed, warming up the surface.
The warmer surface now emits infra-red radiation out into space. But, the CO2 in the atmosphere can absorb infra-red radiation (in the same way as the window of a car) This means the infra-red is absorbed, then re-emitted. Now roughly half of the re-emitted radiation is going to go back to the Earth, while the rest carries on into space (since it will be emitted in a random direction.)
This means the Earth gets warmer, since less infra-red radiation is emitted into space!
So think of the Sun as pumping in energy to the Earth, the Earth will heat up and emit more and more radiation until the amount being emitted is equal to the amount coming in from the sun. More CO2 will reduce the amount being emitted, which will increase the temperature the Earth will heat up to.
But the Earth is BIG. So heating up will take some time. This means that the temperature rises we have had up till now are from the CO2 we emitted some time ago, if we stopped emitting any more CO2 today, the Earth would still keep warming until it reached equilibrium. But we are STILL pumping CO2 into the atmosphere from fossil fuels. This means that temperature we are heating up towards is also increasing! This is a bad thing.
Even worse, is that ice is reflective. That means that at the moment the ice cover reflects visible light into space which helps keep the Earth cool. If the ice melts, then that light will be absorbed which will heat the Earth up even more, possibly melting more ice...
No-one has anything to gain from pretending that climate change is happening. It is happening, and its going to get worse.
