Dear All,
I've just completed the 3 trials. Now have to become hortator of the 3 houses.
Thought I'd start with Redoran House.
Went to Ald'Ruhn and they will have nothing to do with me. Say that I'm the Nevarine and also an Imperial agent - Goodbye.
They tell me about the rules etc but I cannot join the house.
What have I done wrong. Is there anyway back. I really don't want to start again if I've gone down a blind alley.

You're fine. House Redoran, as any savant or scout will tell you, is the most Traditionally Dunmer of the houses, so they're going to ally with the Temple more than anyone else. So as long as you're a threat to the temple, you're a threat to Redoran.
So, your task is to make yourself no longer a threat to the Temple.
If no characters have told you this yet, the Archcanon of the Temple wants to see you. Visit him at his office in the Temple canton at Vivcc. The entrance to his office is on the east side of the building, on the top level (right next to the tunnel that leads under the Big Shriny Thing That I Forgot The Name Of). Talk to him, and that will start you on the path to get rid of that pesky "enemy of the Temple" designation. Beware, though - if you aren't already a member of the Temple, everyone associated with the Temple might be pretty pissed at you. I was always a member of the temple, so the Ordinator guards didn't try to kill me or anything. Can someone else shed any light on this? Will Ordinators try to kill you after you proclaim yourself Neverine but before you clear things up with the Temple?
See also these threads: (the Search button in the upper-right corner of every TTLG page might help you with future questions)

Hmm.. I've always gotten to the top of the Temple before I started the main quest, so take this with a grain of salt...
Zaphod: Unless I'm much mistaken, the arch-canon only wants to talk to you after you've been declared Nerevarine by all the Ashlander tribes and also Hortator by all the Houses... no?
richardwillis: Try talking to the head guy in the Sarethi manor; I think he's the one that (if you'll run an errand or two for him) will talk sanely to you and give you leads with the other Redoran councillors. He's just inside the door and down the steps, and (IIRC) is wearing a reddish robe. (Btw, just as an FYI, all bets are off if you kill any of the Redoran councillors except Venim, and he you can only fight in a duel in the Vivec arena)

Correct. You might get the invitation earlier than that, but he won't talk to you before you have completed both the 4th and 5th trial.

Athyn Sarethi is the most open minded of the Redoran. And Venim will only duel you after you have gained the support from all the other council members. You can not kill any other Redoran council member, if you do you will never be able to become Hortator of Redoran (this also kicks in if you killed just one of them at level 1 or however early it was possible for you).

Forsythe: I certainly don't remember it that way. I remember visiting the Archcanon and Vivcc shortly after being named Neverarine by the 4 tribes.
Of course, as in all things, there possibility exists that I'm talking straight out my ass.

Zaphod: Hmm... I know that Sarethi's the one that hands you the package (w/ invite) from the arch-canon, and he does so only after he formally declares you Redoran Hortator (I haven't extensively checked in the editor, as I'm at work, but that's how I got the invite both times). You sure you weren't Hortator of all houses before you talked to the arch-canon? Unless I'm mistaken, Vivec won't even talk to you (other than to tell you you're not ready yet) until you've become both Hortator and Nerevarine of all.
WingedKagouti: Hmm.. isn't that almost exactly what I said?
Edit: Fixed a typo... 'WingerKagouti' indeed.... :tsktsk:

I wasn't Nerevarine of any of the tribes when I got the invite, and successfully talked with Vivec. I was Telvanni Archmagister, so was automatically the Hortator for them. I went and talked to Redoran and did all the quests. Went to Vivec to battle Venim. Killed him, and then hang around Vivec to become Hlaalu Hortator. Once I'd got all their support, I went back to Curio and was named Hortator. I spoke to him again, and I got the 'the archcanon is worried about blah etc blah go talk to him' message. So I did. And then spoke to Vivec. I went back to Ald'ruhn to finish off Redoran, and then got the package saying I was an outlaw :D I initally hoped there was going to be some sort of internal Temple power struggle between the Ordinators and the rest before realising it was just a broken quest :D
I wasn't a member of the Temple when I went to the Cavern of the Incarnate, and the Ordinators were fine with me when I saw them. A little grumpy, sure, but all I got was 'rarar you're a heretic i don't like yuo! but the law says i can't get you'

Hrm.. just goes to show I don't know everything by a long shot, no? :p
Myoldnamebroke on 24/7/2002 at 21:16
Honestly, that's just pathetic. I mean, come on! We expect you to be able to give us a complete run down on all the bugs for quests you didn't do!
Forsythe on 24/7/2002 at 21:29
*laugh* Thanks, I needed that ;)
